Dealing with Body Image: Don’t Distort Yourself!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

Nowadays, it seems like crazy-thin models are present wherever we look. From television and the Internet to print media, advertisers across media platforms create and support a narrow definition of beauty. As a result, it can be difficult for us to see our bodies in a positive light. We don’t remember the wonders that Photoshop is responsible for. Luckily, programs like the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty (image below) use undistorted photographs of women in advertisements to show that real beauty is achievable.

All you need to do to feel beautiful is to be yourself.

Here are some steps to help you see your body in a more positive light:

Acknowledge That Photoshop Does Not Define Beautiful

Photoshop is a technique used to perfect advertising images. The women in those pictures do not naturally look that way. Their bodies are, in fact, airbrushed beyond recognition. Often, the women are underweight, and advertisers erase any signs of bad health that don’t fit their ideas of perfection.

Think Positively

It’s hard to see your body positively if you think negatively. Don’t think, “I’m fat,” “My torso is too long,” or “My nose is big.” Thoughts are like habits: repeating them means reinforcing them. Stay positive with observations like “I look great today,” or “This color really brings out my eyes.” The more positive you are about your body, the more you’ll see your own beauty.

Look at the Sum, Not the Parts

You may find it easier to stay positive when you acknowledge that there is more to you than appearance. Remember the old saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover?” People are the same way. Let your personality shine! Show people how fun loving you are, or how much you enjoy running through the park every morning. Remember that you are more than what meets the eye of others.

Is There Something You Want to Change?

Is there something that really bothers you about your body? Think of a healthy way to change it. If you want to lose a few pounds to fit into that perfect dress, though, consider two things. First, that dress may not be perfect if it’s making you view your body negatively. Second, don’t compromise your health to lose weight

Exercise and Eat Healthy

You know those days when you somehow end up eating for lack of something better to do? Stop that. Consider whether your body is really hungry or whether you are just bored. Don’t skip meals. Choose what to eat and when with your health in mind, though. You don’t need to count calories; just try to cut back on ramen noodles and splurges to consume healthy, balanced meals a couple of times a week.

In addition to eating healthily, exercise can make you feel good too by releasing endorphins that make you feel happy and empowered. The more you exercise, the happier you feel. The happier you are, the better your overall health routine.

Be Inspired

Remember, you are beautiful! Drop commercialized beauty ideals and realize that beauty surpasses the skin. Dress to impress…yourself. Wear outfits that make you feel great! The more put-together you are, the happier you will feel. Begin your mornings with a self-compliment, or find a quote that speaks to you.

Remember, beauty is not only in appearance, but in personality and character as well. Don’t try to become a fictional character! Look at who you are as an individual instead of picking on specific things you dislike about yourself. Stay healthy and

exercise to become happier. Be yourself because there is no better “you” than you.
