The Eight People You’ll Meet At Mizzou

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.
It doesn’t take long to figure out that there are many types of people who go to Mizzou. Do one lap around the quad, and you’ll see diverse groups of friends either hanging out on the columns or throwing a Frisbee in the grass. Here are eight of the many personalities we see on campus every day.

Future Mizzou 39 Member
Whether she’s a member of Tour Team, AASB or Summer Welcome, you’ve seen her around campus. In fact you always see her because you’re not sure what she isn’t involved in! She’s most likely wearing an MU polo or Mizzou BCBG (that’s business casual black and gold). She’s smart, driven and ready to fill out the next application that comes her way. We all want to be her. Luckily she’s always helpful and is a great resource for ways to get involved.

Hipster J-Schooler
What do an oversize camera case, skinny jeans and coffee from Lakota have in common? They all accompany the J-school student. He rides his vintage bike to class and wears thick-rimmed eyeglasses even if his vision is 20/20. He’s from out-of-state and isn’t afraid to ask you for a quote, although he’s probably asked you for one before. After chasing stories at The Maneater, he’s now making a name for himself at the Missourian. Outside of the newsroom, he’s always willing to let you update your music collection by taking indie tunes from his iPhone.

Human or Zombie – We Don’t Know
This student shows his true colors once a semester. It’s time for him to start playing when he ties on a bandanna and carries around a pair of socks in his backpack. When you walk to class with him, don’t be surprised if he wants to cut through buildings instead of walking outside. After all, the insides of buildings are “safe” from any attack. He also carries a Nerf gun, but don’t worry, he’ll keep it concealed in class. In the end, whether human or zombie, he sticks by his fellow players in combat.

The Jones Girl
If she’s not currently living in Jones, she did her freshman year. Unlike many of the other girls on campus, she’s probably in two all-girls houses – her dorm and a Panhellenic sorority. As one of the only all-female dorms on campus, Jones has a sisterhood of its own. She painted her sorority’s letters in bright neon paint on her window. She’s usually pretty tired because Jones is always full of energy. She sticks together with her Jones sisters, whether they’re hanging out in the lounge or sitting next to each other in class. Even when she moves out, she’ll attest that “once a Jones girl, always a Jones girl.”

The Frat Star
Just take one lap through Greek Town, and you will find him easily. Any day the sun is out, you can spot him on his front lawn tossing around a football, blasting music on his speakers and checking out the girls who pass by. The pledges in his house are recognizable early Monday mornings when they sport their business casual attire. But every other day, you will see him on campus decked out in Polo (or Vineyard Vines, depending on the day) with Sperrys and Croakies to finish off the look. We’re not entirely sure what else goes on inside the walls of the frat castle, but we do know that Mizzou’s frat boys are Southern gentlemen known to have tried and true bromances.

The Country Boy (or Girl)
He most likely grew up on a farm in a small town in Missouri, and that’s exactly why we love him. We’re charmed by his accent and the way he always holds doors open for us. He’s strong and sweet and always treats us like ladies. Whenever we need a ride, he’s there in his pickup truck, and he’s always helps when we need our cars jumped or any mechanical devices fixed. He appreciates the simple things in life and keeps us grounded.

The Outspoken Activist
She’s passionate – and makes sure we know it. She’s not afraid to stand up in Speaker’s Circle next to Brother Jed and shout the 10 steps to putting on a condom. The activist is involved with The Women’s Center, RSVP and Green Dot. Her goal is to ensure we have a voice when it comes to violence prevention. She’s bold, outspoken and will always have our back, which is why we admire her!

The St. Louis Kid
She’s from St. Louis and everyone knows it. In general most of her high school is at Mizzou, so she loves to catch up with (or occasionally avoid) the former classmates she runs into. Once she learns that someone she is from St. Louis, the first thing she’ll ask is, “What high school did you go to?!” The St. Louis kid always has a ride home on the weekends and is passionate about her hometown. She’ll correct you if you call Bread Co. “Panera” and will insist t-ravs and Imo’s are the best foods you’ll ever eat. The St. Louis kid brings a taste of urban Missouri life to MU.

Lindsay Roseman is a senior at the University of Missouri, studying magazine journalism and Spanish. In Columbia, she is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta women's fraternity, Mizzou For Malawi Steering Committee, and can be spotted on campus touring potential Journalism School-ers. This Chicago native loves a good Jodi Picoult book, trying new foods, traveling, and hitting the pavement for a run. After reporting for the school newspaper and interning in her hometown, she spent the summer in NYC at Women's Health Magazine and now is so excited for a great year with HC Mizzou!
