The annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner took place on April 28, and to no one’s surprise, Trump was not in attendance. Someone who was in attendance, however, was comedian Michelle Wolf. As the entertainer of the evening, Wolf’s speech drew mixed reactions from both conservatives and liberals. Wolf’s ability to expose the hypocrisy in the Trump administration with comedy is just one example why her speech is so groundbreaking.

It’s no question her speech had shock factor, but it was well-deserved. Beginning her speech, Wolf said she knew Trump jokes were getting old, so she wanted to take a jab at him in a different way. How did she attempt to do this, you ask? By targeting the one thing he cherishes most.
“Mr. President, I don’t think you’re very rich,” said Wolf. To follow up, she started a bit with the audience. When Wolf said would say, “Trump is so broke,” the audience would reply, “how broke is he?” She followed with a series of reasons, one of which was: “He looked for foreign oil in Don Jr.’s hair.”
Wolf wasn’t afraid to joke about the Trump administration, either. The three people whose names were mentioned most were Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Chris Christie and Kellyanne Conway. Granted, they were pretty easy targets. However, the audience couldn’t help but laugh at some of Wolf’s remarks.
“[Conway] has the perfect last name for what she does,” said Wolf. Conway looked less than pleased. However, her jokes directed at Sarah Huckabee Sanders have some people divided.
“I have to say, I’m a little starstruck,” said Wolf, “I love you as Aunt Lydia in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’.” Wolf’s stand-up performance has sparked debate in politics. Some think she went too far, others think she could have gone farther.
While some jokes may have shocked audiences, isn’t that kind of the point of inviting a comedian to speak at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner? Michelle Wolf did her job, as well as pointing out the hypocrisy in Trump’s administration. However you may feel about her speech, Wolf has expressed that she wouldn’t change a thing. In an interview with WBHM, Wolf said, “I’m glad I stuck to my guns.”
