The rumors are true: “Zigi” is a thing of the past.
Just as fans were starting to recover from Zayn Malik’s breakup with One Direction, another tragic split has been confirmed.
On Tuesday, March 13, Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid both stated on Twitter they were parting ways. According to People, the couple had not been photographed together since Jan. 29; which had fans wondering if the couple had been riding rough waters. One fan even noticed Zayn had unfollowed Gigi and her mother on Instagram.

Malik and Hadid met back in 2015 after meeting at an after party of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Rumors about a possible relationship began after Hadid starred in Malik’s “Pillowtalk” music video, but the couple did not make their relationship publicly official until gracing the red carpet together at the 2016 Met Gala.

So now, the number one question on grieving #Zigi fans’s minds: what happened?
Malik, who has a tattoo of his now ex-girlfriend’s eyes on his chest (awkward) said in his tweet, “Gigi and I had an incredibly meaningful, loving, and fun relationship and I have a huge amount of respect and adoration for Gigi as a woman and as a friend. She has such an incredible soul. I’m grateful to all of our fans for respecting this difficult decision and our privacy at this time, we wish this news could have come from us first. We love you all.”

Hadid tweeted a similar statement of respect for “Z” and the time they shared together, “Breakup statements often seem impersonal because there is really no way to put into words what two people experience together over a few years… not only in the relationship, but in life in general. I’m forever grateful for the love, time, and life lessons that Z and I shared. I want nothing but the best for him and will continue to support him as a friend that I have immense respect and love for. As for the future, whatever’s meant to be will always be.”

Just one day after Malik and Hadid broke the news to fans, they were both seen out-and-about in separate states; Malik spending some time in the Miami heat while Hadid stepped out on the streets of New York.
