Dear Readers,
Hi! My name is Katie, and I am the new editor at Her Campus Mizzou! I am so happy to be stepping into this awesome position. A little bit about me: I’m a sophomore at Mizzou studying journalism and political science. I’m also a resident advisor and journalism FIG leader, and I report for The Maneater. My hometown is Macungie, Pennsylvania, and my favorite flavor of ice cream is Rice Krispie Treat (go to Sparky’s Homemade Ice Cream downtown). You can email me anytime with pitches or questions at katkgx@umsystem.edu.
This year, I hope to empower a team of student journalists to produce articles on topics they feel passionate about. What especially drew me to Her Campus–among other things–was the publication’s dedication to forging a community of women who wish to share their love of writing with campus. Publications like Her Campus provide a space for college women to have pride in their work as writers and gain experience in the magazine journalism field.
While I am not one of these people personally (I want to be an investigative news reporter), I really love trying new things. I also love Her Campus’s mission. It’s especially relevant at Mizzou’s J-School, one of the best journalism schools in the nation. Women dominate journalism schools, yet only one-third of media employees are women, according to The Poynter Institute. It is for this reason, and many more, that I wanted to join a women’s team of journalists on campus. I look forward to working with our ubertalented bunch of writers!
I’m not a fashion expert by any means. I’m not sure if the skinny jeans in my closet are still trending (I have a feeling they’re not). But, I know for a fact that some of the writers on this staff know the answer to this question and lots of other questions! They’re educated on and passionate about so many things: advocacy, entertainment, fashion, music, the arts, mental health, news, sexual health, sustainability and more. That’s the beauty of a team; everybody contributes different strengths, personal knowledge and perspectives.
This year, I hope you know that Her Campus Mizzou is dedicated to being a safe space for you to read about topics that matter to you. Feel free to pitch us on our “Meet The Team” page.
Here’s to a new school year and a chance for new experiences. See you on campus! Cheers and M-I-Z!
Sincerely, your editor,
Katie
