Murder Mystery Shows to Watch for When School is Trying to Kill You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

Everyone, it’s that point in the semester already.  That time where we want to stay bundled up in bed instead of going to class. Instead of studying, we want to watch Netflix. Sure, it’s only like the fourth week of school, but it’s the spring semester!  We’ve already worked hard for the first semester, and it is slowly becoming hard to push through.  Here’s some great murder mystery shows to watch for when it feels like school is trying to kill you.

“How to Get Away With Murder” — ABC, Netflix

This ABC drama is one with a strong fan base behind it.  This show highlights an interesting tv show structure. It flashes from the past, present and future, following the main characters.  The show follows 5 law students working for their professor, a highly successful defense attorney, their clients and the murders that ensue.  The show will keep you on the edge of your seat, preventing you from doing anything else but clicking the play next button.

“Criminal Minds” —  CBS, Netflix

“Criminal Minds” follows the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI as they profile a criminal in order to solve cases.  Typically, each episode is a different storyline of a killer, and the team catches the criminals through behavioral profiling.  Many love the characters on the show, and they will keep you watching over and over.

“Making a Murderer” — Netflix

This documentary aired on Netflix in 2015 and instantly gained popularity.  Not only is it a documentary following real people, but it involves false incrimination and was an event most of us lived through, even though we may not have heard about it.  The show follows Steven Avery, who went to jail for 18 years for a crime he didn’t commit.  After Avery is released from jail, he is immediately charged with the murder of another girl, despite stating his innocence.  It brings each viewer an important question: did he commit the second crime?

“The Fall” — Netflix

Not only does “The Fall” follow an interesting storyline of showing the perspective of both the lead detective and the killer, it also has Jamie Dornan (from “50 Shades of Grey”) as a main character.  The show takes place in Ireland as a killer is loose killing women without leaving any trace. You follow the lead detective and the killer through the series as they get into close encounters with one another. This show really lets you look into the life of a serial killer and see how detectives solve murder crimes.

Even though it feels like school is closing in on you, like the killers in these amazing shows, just stay focused and work hard.  If you need a break, feel free to binge any of these amazing shows and solve crimes alongside your favorite characters.
