Winter break was long here at the University of Missouri. It gave us time to regenerate after the first semester, sleep as much as we needed, and spend time with family and friends. But over break, some of us might have forgotten to check up on what’s going on in the news. Well have no fear, here’s a quick recap of everything you need to know to be caught up in today’s world.
The Government Shutdown
In case you’re wondering, yes there was a government shutdown. It began on December 22, 2018, when President Trump and Congress could not agree on the federal budget for FY 2019. It lasted until January 25, 2019, and was the longest shutdown in history. They have come up with a temporary plan to fund the government that will last until Friday, February 15. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that both the president and Congress can find a compromise by then.
Meghan Trainor Tied the Knot
This beautiful woman found the man of her dreams. Meghan Trainor and Daryl Sabara said their “I do’s” and had a beautiful wedding in December 2018. Pictures from the wedding can be found on Trainor’s Instagram feed.
March For Life and Women’s March
It is estimated that over 700,000 people gathered in Washington D.C. on Friday, January 18, 2019, for the annual March for Life which is a protest against the case of Roe v. Wade that legalized abortion in the U.S. The following Saturday, people from all over the U.S. came together in over 300 cities and walked for the Women’s March.
New York Reproductive Health Law
The state of New York passed a controversial law which will allow abortions up to the 24th week of the pregnancy. And it will allow abortions to be completed at any point in the pregnancy in order to protect the patient’s life or health. Virginia also presented a similar bill regarding reproductive health.
Golden Globes and SAG Awards
The Golden Globes had a lot of surprise wins this year; you can find a list of all the winners here. The SAG awards also happened in January, so if you missed it, you can still find all the details here. Don’t miss the Oscars which are airing on Sunday, February 24, 2019.
The 53rd Super Bowl
Ah yes, Super Bowl Sunday is nearly upon us. The New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams will be heading it off on Sunday, February 3, 2019. You can watch the game while it airs on CBS at 5:30 p.m. CST. The game will take place in Atlanta and Maroon 5 will be performing during the halftime show. But we all know the real reason we watch the Super Bowl is for the commercials, so hopefully those won’t disappoint.
Groundhog Day
Well friends, Punxsutawney Phil has some good news for us. The groundhog didn’t see his shadow after waking up, so an early spring is predicted. And I think we can all agree that an early spring would be lovely after all of this winter weather we have been dealing with. This just may be the first sign of a great semester ahead of us.
