Black Friday has progressively started earlier and earlier, with some stores even opening up on Thanksgiving Day. It’s not just your grandma who’s complaining.
While some stores refuse to open on Thanksgiving for their employees’ sake, other brands take the opportunity to disavow Black Friday altogether. Here are some places that are not participating and their alternatives.

REI, an outdoor clothing and equipment company, is one brand that will not participate in Black Friday for its third year. They started a movement with the hashtag #OptOutside which encourages customers to go outside instead. The hashtag works as a search engine on their website to show hundreds of photos as inspiration. All outdoor pics serve as inspiration to go outside this Black Friday.

State Parks are doing their part with #GreenFriday. Places like California, Colorado, and Michigan are offering free entry to state parks on Black Friday.
Here in Missouri, state parks are allowing free camping!

Other companies, like Patagonia, are participating in Black Friday but all of their sales are being donated in a campaign called 100% for the Planet. They have and will continue to donate to grassroots organizations this year.

Many stores open on Black Friday but are choosing to stay closed on Thanksgiving day, respecting the holiday for what it is. Stores like Costco said that they value their employees and won’t make them work on a holiday.
