Winter Break: Expectations vs. Reality

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

When the craziness of finals dies down, there is nothing quite as rewarding as packing your bags and heading back to your hometown for some much needed R&R. No homework, no stress – just old friends, family and holiday cheer. But what you think is going to be a picture perfect winter break often takes an unexpected twist. Your expectations for winter break end up being miles away from the reality that you experience. Here are the top ways your expectations for winter break didn’t quite turn into a reality:

Expectation: As soon as you get back, you’re going to go out and show everyone in your hometown what a real college party is like.

Reality: You were actually way too tired to go out and ended up just passing out and staying in bed for 48 hours.

Expectation: You’ll unpack your suitcases ASAP and organize your closet into a temporary, four-week masterpiece.

Reality: You lived out of a suitcase for the bulk of break, watching your room get messier and messier with overflowing piles of clothes, shoes and accessories.

Expectation: Everyday there will be someone to meet up with, and you’ll fall back in love with all of your old hangouts from high school.

Reality: You only got together with a couple of your closest hometown friends and realized how much more fun you have at places by campus than at home.

Expectation: You’ll finally meet the hottie you know you are destined to be with and have a winter break romance.

Reality: The boys from home turned out to be creeps, taken or still in high school, so your dreams of snowflake kisses flew out the window.

Expectations: You will finally stop feeling sleep-deprived and will get the recommended hours of sleep you lost during the semester.

Reality: While you may have had the opportunity to sleep, you stayed up way too late watching Netflix and woke up some time in the middle of the afternoon the next day, still feeling tired.

Expectations: You’ll be productive, social and not waste a minute of your break doing trivial things. After all, you only get four weeks off for winter break once a year.

Reality: Let’s be honest, that was never going to happen.
