American candy is available most places overseas and yet, a lot of candy that is popular overseas is not available in the United States. My boyfriend recently went back to Australia so I asked him to send me a few treats to try out to see how much different they were from the candies here (fun fact: most people in Australia actually call candy lollies)! I decided to try out a few of these candies that aren’t offered here and had my friends take a taste too to get a few opinions. We also decided to do a bonus and try Vegemite which the most famous Australian product. So here’s what we thought!
Â
Cherry Ripe
When we opened this package it smelled like marshmallow bunnies. It was interesting and had a strong coconut taste. I was the only one out of myself and two best friends who was able to taste the cherry. It tasted more coconut than anything else so the name was kind of confusing.

Cadbury Chocolate
I took a frog shaped one while Sabrinna and Ashley chose the koala shape. This was so good. It was probably the creamiest chocolate I have ever tasted. I have had Cadbury chocolate before but it tasted different because it was American made, the ones from Australia taste significantly difficult.

“It smells like Christmas”- Sabrinna
Sabrinna and I didn’t like the texture of it, it felt like a kit-kat made out of 3 Musketeers. This was probably the best way we could try to describe this. The texture was extremely strange but the candy was good. I really enjoyed it, but I feel as if I probably couldn’t sit down and eat a whole container of it which may be a good thing! Ashley didn’t like them at first but kept eating them because, chocolate.

 Crunchie Bar
“Kind of like a butterfinger but worse” –Ashley
This one we did not like too much.. It was chocolately but had a crunchie honeycomb (??) like inside. We couldn’t think of anything similar to it other than a vague taste of butterfinger. This may have been our least favorite because it was dry.

Eucalyptus Drops “Aussie Drops”
“I feel like these are literally cough drops”- Nicole
Out of all the Australian candy, these were my favorite. They are actually used to help soothe your throat… But a lot of kids eat it like candy, it is very popular in Australia. I liked these so much that I asked for more because I could not stop eating them! These were completely approved by us, it was the grand finale to our tasting session.

Vegemite
The first time the three of us tried this we absolutely hated it. We even gagged (gross). We pretty thickly spread the vegemite onto whole grain bread. I didn’t mind it too much, which is odd because I’m usually a picky eater. However, it did vaguely remind me of french onion soup which if you think of it as a gel-like spread its kind of freaky. When I later told my boyfriend about how we all hated it he was shocked and had me try it a different way. He had a very specific method to eating it, you have to put a very thin layer, squish the two pieces of bread together and then fold that in half. This to me feels like a lot of effort, what’s the point in the spread if you can’t taste it. It was an experience trying vegemite. I would actually try it again, but I don’t think my friends ever will.
