A beautiful, cozy, and all together aesthetically pleasing library has always been my happy place. One of the reasons I was so excited to move to New York was because of the multitude of beautiful libraries that would be at my disposal. Below Iâve narrowed down the most beautiful libraries in New York City!
Â
#1 The New York Public Library
Â
Â
The New York Public Library, located on 5th and 42nd, is an absolute must to visit in the city. The iconic architecture and ceilings will take your breath away. Not only is it a landmark of NYC, but itâs also a wonderful place to get work done and read a book. Nothing will make you feel smarter or more accomplished than finishing your essay under this ceiling.
Â
While the main branch of the New York Public Library may not be closest to where you are in NYC, be sure to check out its numerous branches and give as many a visit as you can. Your NYPL library card will work at all of them. Students can apply for a temporary card that does not require a permanent New York address.
Â
#2 Jefferson Market Library
Â
Â
The nearest NYPL to where I live is the Jefferson Market Library, which is a quaint little library located in an old courthouse building in Greenwich Village. I can actually see the very top tower from my dorm room window! Itâs perfect for scanning the shelves for your next read, grabbing a coffee, and then taking a stroll through Washington Square Park to dive into your latest novel. Itâs not the largest library in New York but it does have a wonderful selection of books and media, as well as plenty of tables and seating space to get some work and reading done.
Â
#3 Brooklyn Public Library
Â
Â
Located in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, Â The Brooklyn Public Library is perhaps one of the most unique libraries in the city. The Art Deco building is designed to look like an open book and features beautiful golden accents as you enter through the main doors. The Brooklyn Public Library also hosts multiple literary events such as writing workshops as well as musical performances and many events geared towards children. The first floor âYouth Wingâ is the perfect place to set up shop and work all day.
Â
#4 The Morgan Library and Museum
Â
Â
The Morgan Library and Museum was founded by J.P. Morgan Jr. in 1924 as a way to share his father’s library collection with the pubic. Since then the library has continued to grow as a museum. The museum currently has 9 exhibits on display right now including a holiday exhibit featuring the original manuscript of Charles Dickensâs âA Christmas Carolâ. Escape the cold by visiting this museum and checking out itâs unique literary and historical exhibits. Visit https://www.themorgan.org for information on events and programs.
Â
Honorable Mention: Strand Bookstore
Â
Â
While Strand is a bookstore and not a library, it has one of the most diverse collections of books available for purchase in NYC. From new releases to rare books as well as adorable book-lovers merchandise, there is plenty to explore at any of its 7 locations. Strand also hosts book-related events such as readings and signings featuring authors from around the world. Check out their website at https://www.strandbooks.com Â
Â
While youâre in New York, take some time to venture out to these beautiful libraries, whether to bundle up and get some work done or browse shelves looking for your next read. Donât forget to attend some free programs and events as well!
