I’m probably the only person who hasn’t seen Sex and The City until this point, but I’ve finally joined the club and started watching it. Following the lives of 4 single girls in Manhattan in the 90’s, this show is filled with all of the fashion inspiration, city aesthetics and relationship events (whether they’re romantic or friend related) that you could want in a TV show. While watching the series and currently living in the city, I couldn’t help but wonder what aspects are accurate to life in New York City today? As I sat at my kitchen table on a Saturday morning, the show on, breakfast beside me and coffee in hand, I decided to take one of the most iconic TV shows from the 90’s and analyze the top 5 accurate depictions of life in the city that never sleeps.
1. Brunch
Whether it’s at an “Instagrammable” spot or your local diner, it doesn’t matter: New Yorkers love brunch. This was shown throughout the series and movies when Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte would regularly go out to brunch (note their Saturday morning ritual) to discuss everything going on in their lives from dating to new shoe purchases.
3. All of the Art Gallery Openings/Events
Despite the girls usually being invited, there are always different fashion events and art openings going on in the city. From supporting Charlotte at her gallery openings to attending various fashion events – there are a lot of opportunities to go to different events in the city.
4. The Fashion Is Eclectic and Inspirational
You truly see the most interesting and diverse collections of clothing on the streets of New York. This eclectic style was shown perfectly across the four women’s wardrobes: Samantha’s bold colors and sharp silhouettes, Miranda’s business and urban vibes, Charlotte’s polished and put together aesthetic, and Carrie’s artistic and abstract ensembles.
5. You Spend Most Of Your Time Outside Of Your Apartment
The ladies on Sex and The City are always out on the city streets – you see them spending more time outside of their apartments than inside. This is also true for real life in NYC! With so much to see and do in the city, can you blame the ladies for not staying inside their apartment?
Despite Sex and The City being notoriously inaccurate as far as showcasing a real account of life in New York City, there are some aspects that are real! Whether it’s brunch with your friends, visiting a new pop-up shop, or just making the city streets your runway, these realistic aspects of life in New York City let us all bring a little Sex and The City into our lives.
