On Sunday, LGBTQ+ rights advocate, actress and pop superstar, Lady Gaga, performed the Super Bowl 51 Halftime Show. Gaga began by singing “God Bless America” from the rooftop, as hundreds of drones shown brilliantly like stars, over NRG Stadium in Houston Texas.
She transitioned to “This Land is Your Land” and the drones changed colors to red and blue.
“One nation. Under God. Indivisible. With liberty and justice for all,” said Gaga as the drones swirled into the shape of an American flag behind her. She then dove off the roof, into the stadium.
After descending to the stage in a silver and blue jumpsuit, Gaga played through her greatest hits, “Poker Face,” “Born This Way,” “Telephone” and “Just Dance.”
“Hey dad. Hi mom,” said Gaga in the middle of her 2016 single, “Million Reasons,” from her latest album, Joanne. As she played the piano, gold lights swayed back and forth throughout the crowd.
In the blink of an eye, she swapped her jumpsuit for white shoulder pads, transitioning to her 2009 hit, “Bad Romance.”
Flames erupted from the stage and fireworks shot into the sky as Gaga exclaimed, “Super Bowl 51!”
She, then, threw her microphone and leapt off the platform, catching a silver studded football.
Some are saying that the lack of political focus was refreshing. Others believe Gaga delivered subtle messages of protest throughout the show.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, before the show, Gaga said, “I believe in a passion for inclusion.” She said, “I believe in the spirit of equality, and that the spirit of this country is one of love and compassion and kindness. My performance will uphold those philosophies.”
