Having to give up an animal, no matter what the reason or long you’ve had them, takes an emotional toll on your life. Animals are always there for you and make you feel better on the hard days. I recently had to give up my rabbit Charlie and it’s been very hard.  Â
Although I only had Charlie for four months, we grew a strong bond. There came a time where I had to stop and think what was best for Charlie and his happiness. In my apartment, he was not able to run around like rabbits should be able to because I didn’t have enough space for him. I wanted him to be happy and get the attention and care he deserved. I came to the realization that finding Charlie a new home was the best choice for him. I have never had to do this before and it hurt; I stayed up at night crying and missed him so much.  Â
After a few days, I found Charlie a new home. I had mixed feelings about giving him up, but I knew it was what Charlie needed. The home he was going to had younger kids, so I knew he was going to get all the love he needed. The family who adopted him loved Charlie and I could see that he loved them. Hearing that made me feel better about my decision and happy to know he is in a great home now.  Â
Although giving up an animal is a difficult decision, it’s important to do what’s best for the animal.Â
