I was sitting in my Retail management class learning about the downfall of Victoria’s Secret and how companies want a more body positive look. I sit next to two girls and two guys and as soon as the Aerie commercial came on, they started to laugh, looking at the commercial and the women who weren’t a size 0 and some of them were over the age of 25, saying things “Like who would want to see that, who would buy a bra after that”. I guess I just was shocked, that in this day and age people would still make fun of women, and men for being different and not looking like they just stepped off the runway. I was disgusted and felt dirty that I was sitting in a class all about how the retail world is changing, and how we are changing our views about body image and there are still people making fun of people for their weight.Â
Everyone is beautiful, it doesn’t matter what you look like, it is what you bring to the world. We grew up in a world where body images were everywhere and you were told you had to look a certain way and many of us decided to change the way we look and it needs to stop. Companies that were once only carrying up to size 10 are now starting to carry bigger sizes and being inclusive to all sizes. We need to show that we are all beautiful and everyone is perfect. I know that many people think trying to improve themselves and not be who they really are.Â
I used to be ashamed of how I looked, even when I was skinny. I have always struggled with body images and how I looked, I thought I needed to look a certain way to feel happy and I believed that I could never be happy. I realized that isn’t true and I am finally starting to feel comfortable in my own body.Â
I think that we need to be okay with everyone and who we are. We need to support anyone and everyone based on who they are. We are all special in our own way and honestly that is the best policy. We need to start accepting everyone and stop judging! We are all perfect!.
