Collegiette’s, it’s officially that time of the year: midterm season. That being said, are you in need of some motivation? Well have no fear, 10 Songs to Get You Through Midterms is here! (Cheesy, I know but if you are a music lover like me, you will enjoy this list.)
Survivor – Destiny’s Child
This tune is a definite must have on any motivational playlist. But, it’s especially relevant for midterm season because let’s face it, exams in college can feel like one battle after the next.
Fireflies – Owl City
While this song is much more laid back than the latter, the soothing voices throughout are sure to calm you down and put you right into the perfect study mood. My favorite lyric is the last line which says “Because my dreams are bursting at the seams.” Just remember that you have dreams to achieve so it’s important to breathe, relax and show that exam who’s boss.
Don’t Worry Be Happy – Bobby McFerrin
Here’s another laid back tune that’ll keep your mind at ease as you study. “You might want to [listen] note for note.” This is one of my ultimate favorites because it not only sounds good but the lyrics are so relevant to everyone. We all face trouble and in college we are all faced with exams so like McFerrin sings, “In every life we have some trouble/When you worry you make it double/Don’t worry, be happy.”
Firework – Katy Perry
I love this song overall but I especially love the line, “Baby, you’re a firework/Come on, let your colors burst.” Katy Perry is telling us to study so hard that the only thing that you can do is shine. So go out there and pass those midterms with flying colors.
Get Lucky – Daft Punk
While this song can be interpreted in a variety of ways, let’s just refer it to the luck of the test gods. I don’t recommend all-nighters but when push comes to shove, “We’ve come too far to give up who we are/So let’s raise the bar and our cups to the stars.” In this case let’s raise our coffee cups or red bull cans to the ceiling of the library as we study our behinds off.
Who Says – Selena Gomez & The Scene
I think Selena Gomez does a wonderful job of portraying all of the insecurities that most of us feel or have felt in life. She also makes sure to incorporate beauty and dreams into the lyrics. It’s also super relevant to midterms because afterall, “Who says you don’t pass the test/Who says you can’t be the best?”
I Can – Nas
While the full content of this song is definitely deeper than midterm season, the chorus speaks volumes. Along with the lyrics “I know I can (I know I can)/Be what I wanna be (be what I wanna be)/If I work hard at it (If I work hard at it)/I’ll be where I wanna be (I’ll be where I wanna be),” is the voice of kids singing it as well. Think back to when you were a kid and how optimistic you were about life. Use that thought to help propel your motivation during midterm studying, I promise you it will make a difference.
Try Again – Aaliyah
This entire song will put you in a mood to dance and succeed all in one! The late, talented Aaliyah sings this chorus “If at first you don’t succeed/Dust yourself off and try again,” which is self explanatory. Don’t give up! Keep at it even if you don’t succeed on your first try.
Vienna – Billy Joel
This song has several references to the fact that self care is essential and that is especially true during Midterms. “Take the phone off the hook and disappear for a while/It’s all right you can afford to lose a day or two.” With that said, create a midterm study schedule but also make sure to include rest in that schedule. We can’t function to the best of our abilities if we are constantly tired. Besides as Billy put it “Slow down, you’re doing fine.”
Time of Our Lives – Pitbull & Neyo
Now this is the song you play right after you finish all of your midterms and you get to sit back, relax, and chit-chat. So power through those notes, the time of your life is closer than you may believe it to be.
There you have it, nearly forty minutes of inspirational music for your midterm studies. Remember to take small breaks, breathe and relax. But in the meantime, what are some songs that inspire you all to study? We’d love to hear from you in the comment section below!
