With summer 2016 just in our grasp, it’s time to ship our textbooks back to Chegg, put our pencils down and slide on our sunnies! Summer is a time of greatness: beautiful weather, various celebrations, summer jobs, summer internships and delicious food.
Another thing we’re sure you haven’t forgotten about is the release of awesome summer movies! Summer is the hottest season for movies because that’s when all those blockbusters you’ve been hearing about for months are released. This summer I can guarantee that you will be in the theaters at least three times a month (maybe even more!)
With all the great movies coming out, who knows where to start? Luckily, here at Her Campus Montclair we have constructed a list of 6 movies that are bound to be your must sees this summer!
X-Men: Apocalypse- May 27th
There’s nothing like a good action movie. At the end of this month, X-Men will be taking us by storm (see what we did there?! LOL) and releasing their sixth installment. This movie has been in the works for a while now, and we are more than excited for it! Now considering we just said this is the sixth installment, you’re probably worried that you won’t understand the movie if you haven’t seen the other five. DON’T WORRY! X-Men is a movie franchises that is making movies in a very funky order. Assuming you want to watch these movies in order you’re going to have to go by the title and not by the year they were released. If you were to do this, you’d have to see X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), then X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), X-Men: First Class (2011), X-Men (2000), X2 (2003), and lastly X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). It’s not confusing at all, right? X-Men: Apocalypse is about the immortal Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) who has been worshipped as a god since the beginning of time and then becomes the first and most powerful mutant. Awakening after thousands of years, he recruits Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and other mutants to create a new world order. As the fate of the world hangs in the balance, Professor X (James McAvoy) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) get their team of young mutants, better known as the X-Men, to stop their nemesis from destroying the world.
Finding Dory – June 17th
We hope you’re freaking out, because we’re all freaking out! Dory is back and she has some new friends! We have been waiting 13 long years for a sequel to 2003’s hit Finding Nemo and we finally have it. But instead of Finding Nemo, we will be Finding Dory! The super cute blue and yellow fish with a weak memory we all know and love is back to steal our hearts as she goes on a journey to find her family. In the movie, Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) has a very rare moment of memory where she remembers her mother and father. The movie follows the little fish on her journey to find the people who love her most. This is a movie you don’t want to miss! But something tells us we don’t have to tell you that.
The Shallows – June 29th
She’s back! Ah, Blake Lively, how we love thee. This time she’s going to be doing it all while terrified for her life. The gorgeous blonde will be starring in this intense thriller as a young surfer who’s left clinging to a giant rock 200 yards from shore after being bitten by a shark. Don’t think it can get any worse? How about being stuck not only because of an injury but because a great white shark is circling her in the otherwise picturesque Australian waters. When seeing this movie, we have no doubt you will be clinging to your bae (and your popcorn) while watching Blake fight for her life.
The Secret Life of Pets – July 8th
Time to freak out about another animated film! We think the reason college kids are so drawn to animated films is because we just honestly want to be kids again (honestly, who doesn’t?) We’re sure you all wonder what your pets do when you leave, we know we do. Well, The Secret Life of Pets is about just that and you will find out exactly what your pets do when you’re away all those hours. You’ll also be able to recognize some of your favorite voices like Kevin Hart, Louis C.K., Lake Bell, Eric Stonestreet, Jenny State and Ellie Kemper.
Bad Moms – July 29th
Now, we’re positive your mom is perfect (just like ours!) but even superwoman has her moments. In reality, perfect is lame. It’s the imperfect people in our lives that are our favorites, no? Well that’s the case for Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell in their new movie, Bad Moms. The movie follows a group of moms fighting back against the idea that moms have to be perfect and decide to just be the best moms they can me. The movie was written and directed by the same people who wrote The Hangover, so this movie is bound to be a summer comedy smash!
Suicide Squad – August 5th
Superheroes are great and all, but sometimes you just need a good villain in your life. It sounds a bit unconventional, but we think in this case we’ll be fine. The movie stars a long list of A-listers being bad for the greater good like Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne to name a few. The movie is sure to be a blockbuster and there’s even already talks of a second installment. Are you ready to be bad?
