The Best Halloween Costumes at the LGBTQ+ Dance

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

My fourth and final year attending the LGBTQ+ Halloween Dance did not disappoint. Even before the dance officially started, I was analyzing everyone’s amazing costumes. Since there was such a diverse set of costumes, it made for an epic runway battle.

To give you an idea of the best costumes throughout the evening, let’s start off with some of my favorites!

My Opinion: Most Creative

Stingray: Freshman, Megan, Psychology Major

I don’t know about you, but I pondered my Halloween costume for weeks (Inspired by the Snapchat filter, I went as a deer.) Never, in all of my planning, did I consider being an underwater creature — let alone a stingray.

Megan’s costume was thoughtfully designed and one-of-a-kind. And Megan’s enthusiasm was even better when she captured the stingray’s flowy movements.

My Opinion: Best All Around

Mary Poppins: Sophomore, Martha, Music Education Major

Martha literally thought of every costume detail relating to Mary Poppins. I even thought her personality reflected the Mary Poppins character!

My Opinion: Best Group Costumes

Winnie the Pooh and Friends [Right to Left]: All Freshman: Katie and Caroline, Family and Child Studies Majors & Shannon and Danielle, Undeclared

I especially love handmade costumes for Halloween. Handmade costumes show your dedication and love for the holiday! Plus, you can guarantee no one else is going to walk in wearing the same costume. With these Winnie the Pooh costumes, I thought the individual coordination alongside the character details, made them a unique and adorable group!

These comic book characters, the original Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and Catwoman posed spectacularly in the official competition!

The Pink Lady and T-Birds danced to a classic Grease tune in the “Best Overall” category of the Halloween competition. What I loved best was their simplistic and creative costumes, using items they (probably) wear every day!

My Opinion: Best Couples Costume

Harley Quinn and The Joker: Freshman, Rosie, Undeclared and Freshman, Jack, Math Major

Since Suicide Squad came out this summer, there were plenty of Joker and Harley Quinn costumes at the dance. However, this couple had the best costumes individually, and as a pair. The different tattoos, overall costume composure and accuracy to the character, made them stick out amongst the crowd.

Skeleton Bride and Groom: Junior, Mike, Physical Education Major and Sophomore, Alexis, Family and Child Studies Major

Another great couples costume was the skeleton bride and groom. What I love about this couples costume is the attention to detail, especially their matching skeleton faces! Black and white makeup can sometimes look messy but this couple pulled it off perfectly.

Now, when it came to the fashion show, the DJ remixed various songs as costumes strutted down the stage. Here are the official picks for best costume from the LGBTQ+ Dance.

The Judges Pick: Scariest Costume

This person called themselves, “The Doctor.” The only doctor I know, is Doctor Who, so I am unsure if this is a reference to that or if they created this character themselves. Either way, the raven mask was definitely creepy (and very Edgar Allan Poe).

The Judges Pick: Most Creative Costume

This Pharaoh has my vote! Anyone who can make a Halloween costume out of two towels and dance confidently down a runway deserves to win!

The Judges Pick: Funniest Costume

Because no one can act like a stingray better than Megan, she took home the prize for the funniest costume!

The Judges Pick: Best Overall Costume

Eleven from the Netflix series, “Stranger Things,” concluded the costume competition by winning Best Overall Costume! From walking downstage in silence, to the one-word statement, “Friends?” You have to go binge-watch “Stranger Things,” to truly appreciate this costume.

Overall, the LGBTQ+ Dance offered some inspiring and creative looks this Halloween! You can never fail by channeling your love for a favorite TV character, time period or animal to embody the perfect Halloween costume!
