A Guide to Start Living Sustainably

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

We all know that the environment is in serious danger with all the pollution, global warming issues, wildlife endangerment/extinction, wildfires…the list goes on and on. So many different brands are now trying to be more sustainable with their products such as H&M, thredUP, Reformation, and more, as well as new brands that are coming out that specifically sell sustainable products like Hydro Flask and Earth Hero. Of course, there are many ways to be more eco-friendly by reusing resources, using metal straws, reusing bags, etc. Here’s a guide on how to start living sustainably even if it’s starting with the tiniest gesture like recycling or using reusable containers instead of wasting plastic.

1. No more plastic

Plastic and other kinds of trash will end up in our oceans, which is detrimental to marine life. As we know, plastic straws are harmful to our sea turtles. There’s been a new wave of reusable metal straws because of this and it’s a step in the right direction. Obviously, there are other kinds of trash that pose as a threat to the ocean than just straws, but even just making that tiny switch makes a difference! Stainless steel straws are so popular now, you can get them anywhere. I have some from Ocean Life Straws where they provide a set of 4 stainless steel straws with a cleaning brush for free, you just have to pay $6.99 for shipping. Not bad! Also, be sure to get a reusable thermos or water jug so you can refill your beverages instead of wasting plastic bottles or cups. In case you didn’t know, Starbucks will give you a $.10 discount if you use any reusable cup when placing your order! A great sustainable and reusable thermos company is Hydroflask. Their bottles are BPA free and 100% recyclable. Other great sustainable bottle brands are Kor Water, Klean Kanteen, and Fressko. Besides metal, another great switch is wood because it’s easier to produce and is biodegradable.

Tip: Don’t go throwing away all the plastic you have in your home because that’s actually being more wasteful! If you want to make the switch, just use up everything that contains plastic and when the time comes for you to replace it, switch to reusable items.

2. Reusable bags

This one is probably the easiest to start with! Try swapping out all your plastic bags for sustainable reusable ones like Baggu. When you go grocery shopping, bring your own shopping bags to carry away your groceries instead of using their plastic ones. Some stores will even offer you a small discount for using your own reusable bags, just be sure to check with your local shops! Other great sustainable bags to use are the Stasher bags. Stasher bags are reusable silicone bags that come in all different sizes and can be used to store meals and snacks. They can be placed in your freezer or refrigerator and are completely oven, microwave, and dishwasher safe! Stasher bags are great to pack on the go, too. The idea is to replace your Ziploc bags, which also works out in your favor because you’re saving money while helping the environment! They also come in a variety of colors, which adds a fun twist to your normal, everyday snack bags. The Stasher bags are a bit pricey but don’t worry, Amazon has a bunch of reusable snacks and shopping bags for a lot cheaper if you’re on a budget!

3. Organic Feminine Care

Did you know that pads are about 90% plastic? There are feminine care brands such as LOLA and Natracare that provide pads and tampons made with organic cotton. Lots of girls are switching to sustainable feminine products because of the healthier and safer benefits it contains and because authentic pads and tampons are way better for your health and hygiene. Other popular sustainable feminine products girls use are Organicups and period panties. Find what’s most comfortable for you!

4. Sustainable Clothing

The fashion industry is one of the major polluting industries in the world. The manufacturing of clothing wastes tons of water, air, and soil. Brands like H&M are becoming sustainable by using natural and recyclable materials to make their clothes. H&M created something called the Garment Collecting Program where they encourage consumers to drop off any old and used clothing of any brand to their local H&M store. H&M then drops off the used clothing to a recycling plant where the clothes are manually sorted and recycled into new garments. Another great company to shop from is thredUp, which is the #1 online thrift store. ThredUp contains popular brands and high-quality secondhand clothes for a way cheaper price (up to 90% off)!

There are tons of other ways to be sustainable and protect the environment. Sustainability is a lifestyle change and if we all put in a little effort, we can help better the world we live in!
