One of the best decisions that I made this year was changing my desk setup. Up until recently, I used my desk as a place to put all of the random sheets of paper that I’ll probably never need again. I would even put my clean clothes there after I did laundry. Once I got really busy with school and writing, I realized how badly I needed a place to do work. I just couldn’t do homework in my bed anymore because I always ended up falling asleep. But how was I supposed to do homework at my desk if it was always covered in garbage and random crap? I decided that I needed to re-vamp my desk in order to start being productive again.
Here are 4 steps you can take to change your desk setup and boost your productivity!
Find the Right Environment
This first step is definitely the most essential. Your desk needs to be aesthetically pleasing while still being a place you can work at. Whether your desk is in your bedroom, the basement, or you’re lucky enough to have an office, make sure you have the right lighting! If it’s too dark, you’ll strain your eyes with a bright computer screen. If you’re looking for cute light fixtures, desk lamps and string lights are always a good idea.Â
Decorate the Area
Decorate the walls around and the surface of your desk. If you’d rather stick to a minimalistic design, you can still pick out pen holders and paperweights that fit your personal style. If you’d rather showcase your personality through your desk, you can add a few photos, a storage box, or candles! Here’s what I keep on my desk: stress-relief lotion, my favorite candles, a paperweight of a dog wearing glasses, some inspirational quotes printed on wood, and the books I’m currently reading.Â
Get Comfortable
If you’re going to be sitting at your desk for hours when you’d much rather be sleeping, you’re going to need to be comfortable. A good, comfortable desk chair will help you fight the urge to give up and get in bed. Keep in mind that a good desk chair can cost you anywhere from $50-$150 (but some are over $800!). Amazon has this chair for less than $60, and it’s one of their best sellers! It’s so important to try your best to sit with good posture; your back will thank you!
Keep it Neat
Keeping your desk neat and clean is essential. You’ll never find your to-do list underneath the pile of papers from last semester, so use folders and paper clips to stay organized. I make sure that every night I get rid of all of the papers and garbage on my desk that I don’t need. Not sure if you’ll need something again? File it away in a folder instead of taking up space on your desk. You’ll be so much more focused if your work area is organized. The same thing goes for my entire room. I can’t get anything done until it’s clean!
If you enjoy being at your desk because it is comfortable, clean and aesthetically pleasing, then you’ll always want to sit down and do homework. You’ll be so much more productive when you sit down to do homework if you follow these 4 tips!
