Makeup Essentials For When The Instrusive Thoughts Win

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

No matter how often you clean your room, I know you find yourself asking: “How have I been able to put so much stuff in such a tiny room?”

This happens at least once a month for me! Before you throw out all your makeup in a self-deprecating blur, let me remind you of the essentials so you’re not re-buying yourself into a clutter-fueled cycle in the future.

Concealer Is Your Best Friend

As the #cleangirl makeup trend continues to thrive, foundation is absolutely out! It clogs your pores, can feel cakey and most importantly: it can get very expensive very quickly.

Concealer is great for spot-treating, brightening your under eyes and highlighting quickly. It’s also very lightweight and nice on your wallet. Many drugstore brands like Maybelline and E.l.f. make great ones ranging from light to full coverage.

I recommend the E.l.f. Flawless Brightening Concealer because it is medium coverage, which is just enough coverage for getting rid of my study session fueled under eyes. The brush tip makes it easy to apply and the formula blends with a quick tap of a finger. (Not sponsored, but it can be!)

Hold On To Your Powder For Dear Life

I’m begging you, no matter what skin type you have, do NOT throw away your powder!

Whether it’s compact, loose or translucent, you better hold on to it tight and never let go. Powder makes sure your aforementioned concealer does not slip and slide throughout the day and removes shine. Trust me, do not get rid of it. You do not know the horrors of trying to make your perfect shade with eyeshadow nor do I want you to experience that.

Pick One Or Two  Eyeshadow Palette and Throw The Rest Away

Yes, you read that right. Think about how many eyeshadow palettes you own and think about how many you actually use. Pick the one you use the most and the one with the most variety of colors. You’ll thank me later.

Look on the bright side: as painful as that deciding moment may be, think about how these two palettes can serve for a million different eye looks and even double as contour or blush.

You Only Need One Eyeliner! (But There Is An Exception)

If you like doing just a wing sometimes, then you only need one eyeliner. Let me repeat this, not just for you, but for myself also: You only need one eyeliner! Out of all the lines you have, there must be one that is your tried and true.

I have one exception for this rule though: if you have a uniquely-colored eyeliner like yellow or blue or pink, keep those! You never know when you want to change things up.

And there you have it: a list of must-haves to avoid a full wipe-out of cosmetics.
