For those of you who don’t know, The Row is a fashion brand conjured up by the über ~mysterious~ Olsen Twins, Mary Kate and Ashley. Their Spring/Summer 2019 collection for New York Fashion Week was just as hush hush as the identical duo have been in recent years. The only way to get so much as a glimpse of their designs was to check out The Row’s tagged photos on Instagram. Vogue.com is typically my go-to when I am unable to livestream the shows due to their exclusivity or time conflicts but even they neglected to have a narrative on the collection.
From the looks of it, The Row has an extremely minimal aesthetic. Everything from the actual name of the brand down to the color and fabric choices pushes the notion that The Row is about classic, timeless pieces instead of trends on top of trends.
As Vogue Runway put it on their instagram feed, “ @therow’s latest collection was presented with no fanfare and no superfluous distractions. The Olsens have long preferred that their collection speak for themselves…”
The design skills are impeccable. Each garment is clean cut, crisp and tailored to perfection. You can tell that the garments are made out of rich and heavy materials which could attribute to the high pricing of The Rows garments.
For reasons unbeknownst to me, the same model can be seen in each photo I saw. The model has an androgynous look but is only photographed wearing otherwise feminine pieces.
The clothing photographs exceptionally well and it certainly leaves the average person dying to know the reasoning behind it. The Row is so secretive that their Instagram hardly contains photos of their looks at all, past or present.
How did Mary Kate and Ashley develop such a knack for design? What inspires them? Who even are they? Why are they so secretive and serious nowadays? Do they actually exist? WE WILL NEVER KNOW and that’s the beauty of it.
