Lucid Dreams was originally released on Soundcloud in June 2017 and officially released through Interscope Records on May 4, 2018. The track quickly grew in popularity and became a staple song in any summer playlist in 2018. Lucid Dreams peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2018 at number 2. Riding the high tide into the mainstream media, Juice WRLD was able to become a strong influencer in an emerging rap style, Emo-rap. Emo-rap originated in the Soundcloud rap scene in the late 2010ʻs. The genre has the instrumental elements of hip hop but the lyrical influence of emotional outbursts in emo music. The lyrics of Emo-rap tend to focus on depression, anxiety, drug abuse, and heartbreak. Other “fathers of Emo-rap” include Lil Peep (died November 2017) and XXXTentacion (died June 2018).
