10 Things All Public Relations Students Know To Be True

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

1. We love keeping up with current scandals.

The latest United Airlines video? Pure gold. What will the CEO say next? Are they sticking to their crisis communication plan? When’s the next press conference? We’re patiently waiting to see how each company handles their current crisis. Plus, we’re sure that our professors will spend the first half hour of class talking about it the next day.

2. The AP Stylebook is our bible.

Why there are so many changes every year, we have no idea. All we know is that we always have to order the updated version. By the time we graduate, we’ll have at least three copies.

3. We’re pros at public speaking.

When other majors spend hours practicing their presentations, we kind of just wing it because we know we can talk through anything. Our entire career revolves around being able to craft the perfect message.

4. Social media is our life.

Let’s be real, at least half of us have been social media interns or assistants by now. We can go weeks without posting on our own accounts, but when it comes to another company, we’re on top of things.

5. Paid internships are hard to come by.

Seriously, who expects us to do that much work for no pay? Shout out to the companies that actually feel like giving us a decent salary.

6. We’re grammar freaks.

Nothing makes our blood boil more than someone who doesn’t know how to use the right “your.” Really, it’s not that hard.

7. Our classes consist of two assignments.

Press releases and case studies. Enough said.

8. We can write about pretty much anything.

A 6 page paper? We can knock it out in two hours max. Is it bad to say we’ve perfected the art of BS-ing? Either way, it’s true. Writing is kind of our thing.

9. Ad campaigns will never be the same.

Too many times we find ourselves shaking our heads at certain campaigns. Like really? Who comes up with this stuff? (*cough* Pepsi *cough*) Put us in your ad department for an hour, and we’re sure we can come up with something better.

10. We flock to big cities.

Most of us want to end up in Chicago, New York or Los Angeles. Big cities have a special place for us PR folks.
