5 Healthy Super Bowl Snacks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

Super Bowl Sunday is a great day to bring friends together, eat good food and watch hilarious commercials—and maybe enjoy some football too. While the snacks are an important part of any party, a plate of loaded nachos is loaded with more than just bacon and cheese. If you’re trying to save your spring break bod but still indulge in something tasty for the game, Her Campus MSU has a few leaner recipes to try for your Super Bowl party.

BLT Potato Snacks:

Plain Greek yogurt is a great substitute for sour cream. It still has that heavy taste but is much more tummy friendly. These potatoes are only 128 calories a serving and are a sure palate-pleaser.

1 pound fingerling potatoes, sliced 1/4 inch thick

4 strips reduced-sodium turkey bacon, cooked and crumbled

1/4 cup reduced-fat sharp Cheddar cheese, shredded

4 green onions, whites and greens chopped (or 1/4 cup chopped red onion)

2 tablespoons fat-free Greek yogurt

Spinach-Artichoke Dip:

Everyone’s favorite dip just got better at only 59 calories per serving. Try pairing it with warm pita chips or a tray of veggies.

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

1 (16-ounce) can lima (or butter) beans, drained

1 cup light mayonnaise

4 ounces tub-style fat-free cream cheese

1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco)

1 teaspoon capers, drained

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/4 teaspoon dry mustard

1 (14-ounce) can artichoke hearts, drained

1 (10-ounce) package frozen chopped spinach, thawed, drained, and squeezed dry

3/4 cup preshredded part-skim mozzarella cheese

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/2 cup sliced green onions

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Onion Rings

Skip the deep-fried. These onion rings are baked for only 175 calories per serving. You can even season them how you prefer.

2 medium yellow onions

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

3 large eggs

1 1/2 cups fine dry breadcrumbs, preferably whole-wheat

1 tablespoon seasoning blend, such as Cajun, jerk or Old Bay

Olive oil or canola oil cooking spray

No-Guilt Chicken Wings

No Super Bowl party is complete without wings. Instead of greasy, fried chicken, try broiling the meat instead. Five of these tasty wings will only cost you around 160 calories.

2 pounds chicken wings

1⁄4 cup cayenne pepper sauce (preferably Frank’s RedHot),

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

 3 tablespoons low-sodium chicken broth.

Vodka Cocktail

Let the guys drink the beer and try a low-calorie cocktail instead. Vodka is one of the lowest calorie alcohols. This cocktail stands at 80 calories per serving and isn’t packed with sugar.

1.5 oz lime-flavored vodka

1.5 oz light lemonade

1.5 oz tonic water

Juice of 1/4 lime
