6 East Lansing Activities that Healed my Heartbreak

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

In 2022, I had my heart broken for the first time in my life. It was a typical sunny March day when my boyfriend (who I just happened to be head-over-heels in love with) broke the news to me: he didn’t feel the same anymore.

Grief, devastation, betrayal, despair – none of these words felt strong enough to describe what I was experiencing. This breakup came out of left field; I didn’t see it coming until it smacked me right in the face.

Despite the agony I was feeling, I knew that somehow, I needed to heal and move forward. In this feature, I’d like to share with you everything I did to lift my spirits in an otherwise dark and lonely time. Of course – all of these activities and experiences are available right here in good ol’ East Lansing.

  1. A Late Night Trip to Insomnia Cookies

Nothing heals a broken heart quite like a healthy dose of sugar, butter, and chocolate blended together and baked down into a delicious cookie. Or two cookies with a scoop of ice cream between them.

  1. Making Reservations at the Constellation Cat Cafe

If you haven’t heard of this lovely local establishment, then I’m happy to be the bringer of good news. Located on E. Lake Lansing Road, the cat cafe allows you to enjoy anything from a cappuccino to a cookies n’ cream milkshake while playing with the most adorable and fuzzy little cats.

  1. Free Yoga Classes at IM West

Good news – if you’re an MSU student, you can sign up for free group yoga classes at IM West using their online calendar today! A variety of different classes are offered throughout the week; some focus on relaxation and rejuvenation, others are centered around power and groove. Whatever your cup of tea might be, these classes are accessible to all students and will prompt your brain to release the feel-good chemicals you need.

  1. Retail Therapy at Pitaya

It’s one of my favorite places to window shop for trendy clothes (that I typically can’t afford) in the greater East Lansing area: Pitaya. Normally, I tend to shy away from spending $36 on a cute top, but if you’re going through a rough time, there’s no reason not to treat yourself to a little something nice.

  1. Take a Stroll Through MSU’s Botanical Gardens

When I was navigating my way through my breakup, getting my butt out of bed and into the great outdoors was the last thing I felt like doing sometimes. However, breathing in the fresh air and sunshine can truly do wonders for your mental health and clarity. If it’s a nice day out, take a walk through MSU’s botanical gardens while listening to music, a podcast, or the sounds of nature!

  1. Mocktails, Chips, and Salsa with the Besties

The holy trinity. A truly therapeutic experience. Chatting and laughing over mocktails (or their alcoholic counterparts for those of us who are of age) and a big bowl of restaurant-style chips and salsa can do wonders for your healing process. Spending time with friends and staying connected is important to maintain your wellness during a tough time. East Lansing offers several great options, including Barrio, El Azteco, and Acapulco.

Finding joy in the simple pleasures and moments that life has to offer truly helped me reconnect with my life and get through my toughest break-up to date. These six activities helped me do just that. Whatever it is that has you down, stay strong and remember your worth!

Hey everyone! I love writing, working out, meeting new people, and journaling! I'm so excited to be a part of this group!
