If he’s not busy teaching Italian, playing tennis, or presiding over MSU’s Italian Club, he may just be canoeing from East Lansing to Lake Michigan. A senior here at Michigan State, Anthony Swain is an incredibly hardworking, driven, and outgoing student. He is currently majoring in Comparative Cultures and Politics through James Madison College, with a specialization in Western European Studies.
If that doesn’t seem like enough, he’s also pursuing a minor in Italian. For him, things weren’t always as smooth sailing through college as they are now. Swain talked about what a challenge it was to transition into the college setting and find his place within such a large university. He even shared a few laughs about his comical roommate situation freshman year.
“Once you find your niche it will be one of the greatest experiences of your life. You have to find the right people then everything else fits into place,” Swain explained.
Not only has he been very involved here at MSU, Swain has some very inspiring plans for his future as well. He hopes to live and work somewhere in Europe for the European Union, or for either the Italian or U.S. government. His passion for Italian culture and adventure is something you just pick up on when you’re around him. He immediately lights up when speaking Italian or talking about the Italian way of life; it radiates off of him.
When asked, “What is it about the Italian culture that inspires you so much,” with a smile on his face and deep passion in his voice he stated, “I was immediately drawn to it because I like the feeling it gives me. I’m of Italian heritage, and although we don’t speak Italian, we have a strong connection to our heritage and I love feeling tied to my ancestors.”
