Campus Heroine Brytanie Killebrew Won’t let you Limit her or her High Aspirations

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

Name: Brytanie Killebrew
Year: Freshman
Major: Journalism
Minor: Spanish
Hometown: St. Joseph, Mich.

Group involvement on campus: Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ)

Current job: Vice President of SPJ

Dream job:To be Ellen [DeGeneres].  I would love to be a host, whether it was for my own show or just any entertainment network—Style, E!, anything like that.  I would love to build my way up to broadcasting, but I’m [also] very interested in editorial.  I never want to limit myself.

Biggest accomplishment prior to MSU:I’ve made sure I was always involved in something.  I’ve done everything from hosting the Special Olympics to being a pageant girl (Killebrew was crowned Miss Southwest Michigan Teen in 2010).  My biggest overall achievement was being able to speak with young girls and being coaches for an organization called Girls on the Run.

Biggest MSU accomplishment: I wrote up a proposal to speak at a conference for leadership and study skills for high school and college kids in Kalamazoo.  Also, SPJ is huge to me.  I was able to meet with an executive member from the national [chapter].  He spoke with me and said how he was proud that we’re doing such a good job and that I’m so young and so involved.

Inspirational figure: I would say Ellen.  It’s just so awesome that she’s supportive of different organizations.  Seeing how successful she’s become and how she always seems so comfortable in herself—that’s how I’d like be.  I’d like to be comfortable in myself no matter what anybody else thinks of me.

Lauren is a fifth year senior at Michigan State University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Journalism with a specialization in Editorial Reporting which she will graduate with in the summer of 2012. She previously graduated in May 2011 with a bachelor’s of arts degree in Apparel and Textile Design. Last summer she interned at 944 magazine which helped to strengthen her love for journalism. Lauren loves planning events such as the MSU Annual Undergraduate Fashion Exhibit last year where she had some of her designs and clothing featured. She loves sewing in her spare time and creating beautiful clothes for herself, friends and family. Lauren also enjoys entering her designs into fashion shows such as the Annual Apparel and Textile Design Fashion Show last spring on campus where one of her dresses was a finalist for the judges choice award. She loves any kinds of sweets, cooking, crazy nail polish colors, Italian and Mexican food, shopping for shoes, MSU football games and watching The Devil Wears Prada over and over. Lauren is so excited to be a part of the Her Campus team and is very eager to begin the Her Campus branch at Michigan State!
