How to Dress Professionally For a Job Interview

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

We’re approaching the end of a semester. For some it means coming up with money for books next semester for others it means the real world. Either way you’re going to need to know what to wear to land the job.

As an employee you represent your company, and no company wants a slob to represent them. They do not simply look at your clothes; it is all the details from lines under your eyes to dirty fingernails.

For men suits are the best bet when dressing for an interview. Both three button and two button work. Three button suits are recommended for tall men, they sometimes fit better. The key is to have a good fit. You do not want your pants to be too short; on the other hand don’t let them be long enough to drag on the floor. Your jacket needs to be a comfortable fit. The arms have to be the proper length and you need to be able to move in it. JC Penny or Younkers are great because they have suits sold in separate pieces and they tend to have a wide variety of sizes. When it comes to colors pick navy, gray, or black, they are known as the power colors. These colors mean authority, intelligence and power; it also shows that you are a serious applicant. Wear your suit with a freshly ironed white button up shirt, or another muted color like a light blue.

For shoes, pick dress shoes that fit well so you don’t trip or scuffle your feet. Make sure they are polished with no scuff marks. Wear dress socks, not gym socks. Both shoes and socks can be found in stores like Kohl’s at reasonable prices.

Hair is easy for men as it is usually short. If it is long I would suggest getting a clean cut. I am all about personal expression but you will not be taken seriously. If you already have the clean-cut hair do’ don’t wreck it with a ton of hair gel.

Remember your basic hygiene. This can go for men and women. Do the basics before interviews. Shower, shave, brush your teeth and check your nails. Men just need to make sure their nails are clipped and cleaned. Women are advised against painting their nails in odd or bright colors. I know neon’s are all the rage but save that bright yellow for Saturday night, or at least after you get hired! If you do want to polish them up I suggest a neutral tone or French manicure.

This whole hair thing is a lot harder for women. I suggest not having crazy colors if you are going for a serious job. Keep your hair out of your face. Pulling your hair back into a simple ponytail shows that you are polished but won’t take you forever to get ready in the morning. Meaning you won’t be late. You can leave it down if that makes you more comfortable just make sure you straighten it or keep your curls under control. This is not time to pull a Lady Gaga, keep it simple keep it polished.

Make up and accessories are another thing we ladies need to worry about. For make up it is simple. Go minimalistic, but don’t go without. By wearing make up you are showing you care about your own appearance and you will care about the appearance of the company you work for. This makes you seem more professional. If you paint it on like a lady who works at night, you won’t be taken seriously for a nine-to-five. For jewelry use the same idea as makeup, minimal. Earrings need to be little hoops or studs. Necklaces should have a thin chain and the only ring you should wear is a wedding ring.

Suits are best for women too, stick with the blacks and navys as well. These can be found in any department store like Macy’s, or in stores such as New York and Company. If you opt for a suit that has a skirt be sure it is long enough you can sit in it and make sure to wear nylons. Not tights, not leggings, not bare legs. Nylons in neutral tones look more professional. Heels should be shorter than normal; this is not the time for stilettos.

Remember being fashionable, punctual and professional will help you get the job.
