As this semester is coming to an end, I would like to tell you guys about my favorite class during my 3 years spent at Michigan State University.
I have learned many things through my classes at MSU, but I think this class in particular has taught me and given me real practice in something that can benefit anyone!Â
Being a supply chain major and about to enter the business world, this class has taught me life skills and given me the confidence to stand up for myself.
One of the most important aspects of business or many other career paths are communication and speaking. The power of words can change a lot of what you receive. The quote my professor always said was: “Life is not fair – you don’t get what you want, but you do get what you negotiate.” Having said that the first day of class, I already had a feeling that I was going to enjoy this class a lot.
Every class we were split up into pairs or groups to negotiate from the perspective of a role that was given to us and we had the whole week to prepare. Something that I find interesting is that the other side had information that we don’t know and vice versa. Like real life, it models how there are many unknowns and ways to use that against your advantage.Â
Topics that were covered throughout the semester were disruptive negotiation, integrated negotiation, planning process, usage of leverage, agency issues, ethics, negotiating in teams, and more.Â
We were taught the different negotiation techniques used in business, and after the negotiation we would discuss as a class what we learned. Secrets were uncovered and I have learned at least one thing from each discussion.Â
My favorite negotiation was one we had with teams where we were matched with another team. I was more confident and liked having the different perspectives of people on my team build a stronger argument and look for any weak spots.Â
If your school is offering a negotiation class, take it! It will benefit you regardless of your major!
