Football season at Michigan State brings tailgaters from all over together to watch the game, celebrate, and of course eat. The traditional tailgating dishes are not always the healthiest, so HC Michigan State has a few helpful tips! Instead of eating high calorie snacks, there are multiple ways to tweak the dish into a healthier alternative.

Wings

Chicken wings are a tasty and easy game day food, but are also deep-fried. Create a healthier wing by baking them in the oven and lightly coat them in your favorite sauce. Your wings will be lower in calories and still taste delicious.

Dogs

Hot dogs and burgers are a football crowd favorite. To eliminate a few calories when enjoying these foods, try turkey dogs or turkey burgers. They have less fats and sodium, and you can still top them with your favorite veggies. Try substituting white buns with whole-wheat buns!

Chili

Chili is a great meal for the colder days but can also be high in fat and sodium. Try eliminating meat altogether and enjoy a vegetarian chili, or use ground turkey or chicken. Double up on beans and veggies and enjoy a lower calorie, warm and comforting meal.

Kabobs

Building shish kabobs are a fun and healthy dish—not to mention easy. Choose your favorite veggies and lean chicken and simply throw them on the grill. Top them with a few of your favorite seasonings and you have another tasty, healthy tailgating dish.

Great alternatives to chips, nachos, and pasta salads are low calorie snacks such as: veggie trays, fruit salad, dried fruit and trail mix.
