Ways to transition your skincare routine for the winter season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

The winter season is here and transitioning your skincare routine is key to protecting your skin from the cold weather. Here are a few tips on what to include into your skincare routine for this upcoming winter.

Moisturize moisturize moisturize!

Moisturizing your skin is important for any season of the year, but your summer moisturizer may not cut it for the upcoming winter season. Transitioning to a heavier moisturizer will help create a protective layer for your skin while keeping it hydrated. Make sure you pick one that matches your skin type for optimal results.

Introduce a facial oil

Facial oils are another great way to help hydrate your skin especially during colder weather. These skincare products can help create a protective barrier from environmental damage. Again┄ make sure you select a facial oil that will help your skin type the best. Facial oils are an add-on to your skin care routine and should not replace your facial moisturizer.

Remember to exfoliate

The cold weather can lead to dry, cracked, flaky skin. Exfoliating will help remove dead skin cells which will allow your skincare products to be absorbed better. However, do not get too carried away with exfoliating ┄ an abundance can cause more harm than good. Gentle exfoliants are recommended during winter.

Change up your facial cleansers

Washing your face every day is an important step in a skin care routine. Facial cleansers with harsher chemicals can dry out your skin which can strip your skin of natural oils. During the colder months switching to a gentle or hydrating facial cleanser may be the best choice for your skin type.

Add more masks

Face masks are fun anytime of the year to enhance your skin care routine. There are so many different types of masks out there. If you’re not a fan of sheet masks, try sleeping masks. Sleeping masks can be left on overnight, which helps hydrate your skin. Remember that masks with hydrating and moisturizing ingredients will help your skin during the colder months.

Adjusting your skincare routine in the winter is essential for keeping your skin glowing year round. I hope that some of these tips help you keep your skin smooth and soft from the harsh wind and cold weather!
