For first-year Logan Hoffman-Smith, “where are you from” is a hard question to answer. Logan, who is single, pansexual, genderqueer and uses they/them pronouns, was born in Hong Kong and raised in Japan, Switzerland, Singapore, New Hampshire, and New York, where their family still lives. “I like the town that I live in a lot,” they say. “There’s a good art scene, and it’s a big foodie kind of place.” They describe themself as “hungry for food and adventure”; when asked if they consider themself a foodie, they chuckle nervously. “I just like to eat a lot of food…. I really like Japanese food, probably because I lived in Japan. Iya has some f—ing good ramen, it’s like… good sh–, good sh–.” While they stand out in appearance and are rarely seen without a snapback, Logan is cool and quiet in speech. They make a note of their swearing: “I’ll try to keep it PG.”
How would you describe your personal style?
Whatever’s not smelly on the floor. I like flannel, I’m kind of stereotypical in that sense. I just like flannel and snapbacks.
Who is your celebrity crush?
Kristen Stewart. Always has to be Kristen Stewart.
Describe your ideal date.
I’d wake up in the afternoon. It’d probably be in the fall, so all the leaves are changing, it’d be a nice temperate day. We’d eat some good food, then just talk, get to know each other really well, maybe drink some tea and watch a movie. Then they’d read me a cute children’s book and we’d fall asleep together.
Do you have a most embarrassing moment?
I had long hair when I got here and it kind of hid my neck a bit. So then I cut off all my hair, and I noticed that I had this big splotch on my neck. And I was like, “oh my goodness, I wonder if this is a fungus or something.” So then I talked to my friends and I was rubbing it off, and I was like, “Guys, are you supposed to wash your neck?” And they were like, yeah, that’s normal. So I haven’t washed it in 18 years. They didn’t comment on it because they thought it was a birthmark. I had 18 years of dirt on my neck.
Would you rather break Drake’s heart or disappoint Nicki Minaj?
I’d rather break Drake’s heart. Breaking the hearts of men? I don’t mind at all.
If you could have any kind of pet, what would it be?
I’d want a capybara, it’s like a huge f—ing rodent. They’re very grumpy and mean apparently, but then I could just be grumpy and mean with it. I wouldn’t be alone in my teenage angst.
Why did you choose Mount Holyoke?
I chose it early decision. The vibes here are really good, everyone was nice. It was close enough to home, but it was far enough that I could go home if I needed something, but not have my mom coming in every day. I really liked the architecture, and the community seemed really good. And also hella queer.
