Like many students at Mount Holyoke College, I have a strong affinity for all things star signs. I find myself checking Co-Star everyday and using my star sign to explain everything about who I am and what I do. Recently, I learned that Spotify created playlists designed for every sign. I decided to make my own playlist for each sign based on what I know about them and what I feel they could enjoy listening to. I set about creating a soundtrack of 10 songs for each of the zodiac signs that encompasses the defining qualities of each sign and that would appeal to them. The order of songs in the playlist are meant to flow together nicely and create a beginning and end that would appeal to the ear of the sign that it is designed for.
ARIES
I find the Aries to be one of the strongest signs of the zodiac, personality-wise: strong willed, self-empowered, and bold. I created a playlist of songs that are iconic. Ranging from Melanie Martinez and Billie Eilish to Queen and Journey, this playlist is full of tracks that will either serve as an Aries anthem or empower them even more. I chose to open the list with “Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish to set a strong tone and chose to close with “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen to finish with an Aries anthem embodying strength and determination.
The Track List:
“Bad Guy” Billie Eilish
“Don’t Stop Believin’” Journey
“Valerie” Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson
“Ego” Elton John
“The Principal” Melanie Martinez
“Can’t Be Tamed” Miley Cyrus
“Sugar, We’re Goin Down” Fall Out Boy
“You Can Call Me Al” Paul Simon
“Not Ready To Make Nice” Dixie Chicks
“Don’t Stop Me Now” Queen

TAURUS
The Taurus is the first earth sign of the zodiac. They tend to be well grounded and very practical. I chose tracks that were very light, delicate, and mostly free-spirited. I opened the setlist with “Beautiful” by Bazzi because it is a very light song musically. I used to listen to this song first thing in the morning to set myself in the right mood for the day. It is a beautiful song lyrically. The rest of the songs focus on freeing the Taurus a little from their normally very grounded personality. Finally, I close with “Oblivion” by Bastille to bring back a little bit of the practical side of the Taurus but leave them feeling uplifted.
The Track List:
“Beautiful” Bazzi ft. Camilla Cabello
“People Need a Melody” The Head and The Heart
“Saturday Sun” Vance Joy
“Clean” Taylor Swift
“Favorite Colour” Carly Rae Jepsen
“Volcanic Love” The Aces
“Someone New” Hozier
“Cinnamon Girl” Lana Del Rey
“Say Love” James TW
“Oblivion” Bastille

GEMINI
The average Gemini gets a bad reputation. They are often declared two-faced, selfish, and manipulative. I find this to be quite the contrary. Many of my close friends and both of my siblings are Geminis. My sister is even a triple Gemini. I find them to be very strong on the exterior but very caring and great listeners deep down. I developed a playlist for the gemini that is mostly comprised of strong artists and songs mixed with emotional songs hidden behind hard music. The first song is “Smile” by Avril Lavigne. This song starts out with a very hard front and morphs into an emotion-filled story. The rest of the tracks are comprised of mainly power anthems and pride designed to make a Gemini be proud of their strong personality. It closes with “You and I” by Lady Gaga to leave the Gemini feeling tenacious and mighty.
The Track List:
“Smile” Avril Lavigne
“Love Song” Sara Bareilles
“Motivation” Normani
“Sunday Candy” Donnie Trumpet
“Split Personality” P!nk
“Miss Independent” Kelly Clarkson
“(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” The Rolling Stones
“Shark In The Water” VV Brown
“Juice” Lizzo
“You And I” Lady Gaga

CANCER
Cancer is typically very sensitive and empathetic. They are not shy when connecting to their own emotions. They are great listeners and tend to be very low-key. This playlist was designed to play into the very emotional side of the Cancer. It opens with “Please Don’t Leave Me” by P!nk and is immediately followed by several ballads and sad songs. It closes with two of the most melancholy songs I know. This playlist is stripped back to some pretty raw and emotional songs that should bring out the deep side of the Cancer sign.
The Track List:
“Please Don’t Leave Me” P!nk
“Cornelia Street” Taylor Swift
“Supercut” Lorde
“No Goodbyes” Dua Lipa
“The One That Got Away” Katy Perry
“A Sky Full Of Stars” Coldplay
“Ophelia” The Lumineers
“Hey There Delilah” Plain White T’s
“Show Me What I’m Looking For” Carolina Liar
“Brother” NEEDTOBREATHE

LEO
The Leo needs little introduction. They are confident, proud, and outgoing. They are, in my opinion, the strongest personality of the zodiac. The songs on the list start as high energy self-empowerment bops from some of the most badass artists in the business. As the tracks go on, the songs tend to diminish in energy and display some softer beats that still show some strong opinions. The list features strong artists, like HyunA, who has broken norms for her culture and made a name doing so. I designed this to help the Leo feel strong with their energy but also centered. The list ends with “Sixteen” by Ellie Goulding. I hope that any Leo can listen to these songs and feel bright and ready to take on the day.
The Track List:
“Truth Hurts” Lizzo
“I Want You Back” Jackson 5
“Cool” Jonas Brothers
“The Man” Taylor Swift
“Wings” Little Mix
“Lip and Hip” HyunA
“Unwritten” Natasha Bedingfield
“1950” King Princess
“NASA” Ariana Grande
“Sixteen” Ellie Goulding

VIRGO
The Virgo tends to be very practical and well planned. However, this can lead them to overthink things for long periods of time and then leave them feeling hung up on it. I created playlist of generally feel-good songs. This playlist is centered on just picking yourself up and being productive. I started with “Break My Face” by AJR to really begin with an uplifting tune. The whole song is focused on seeing the best in any situation. The whole playlist is about optimism and brightness. In addition, the Virgo can tend to be very co-dependent. These songs also express a feeling of independence. It closes with one of my favorite songs from Mamma Mia. My intention is to leave a Virgo feeling a little bit more carefree.
The Track List:
“Break My Face” AJR
“Walking on Sunshine” You Only Live Once
“You Only Live Once” The Strokes
“Roaring 20s” Panic! At the Disco

LIBRA
I created the Libra playlist keeping in mind that they are very balanced. I am a rising Libra myself and so I also had my own desires in mind. I added tracks that, like the Virgo, were very carefree. I hoped that the playlist was full of lighthearted beats that didn’t make you feel caught up too much. The songs either have a very clear message or are just very pretty to listen to. I hope that any Libra could find a sense of balance to the songs and can appreciate how easy going they truly are.
The Track List:
“What Do I Know” Ed Sheeran
“I Dont Care” Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber
“Uptown Girl” Billy Joel
“Good Time” Owl City
“Drops of Jupiter” Train
“Put Your Records On” Corrine Bailey Rae

SCORPIO
The Scorpio gets a very distinct reputation. I wanted to take the strong parts of the Scorpio and represent them through music. I picked songs that are strong, powerful, emotionful, and passionate. It opens with the very iconic “Welcome to the black Parade” by My Chemical Romance. This opens the entire playlist on an intense note. I wanted to directly appeal the passionate side of the Scorpio. Followed by some of the most intense songs from Rihanna, Shawn Mendes, and Billie Eilish, this playlist should provide feelings of empowerment and high energy.
The Track List:
“Welcome to the Black Parade” My Chemical Romance
“I Write Sins not Tragedies” Panic! At the Disco
“Earned It” The Weeknd
“bury a friend” Billie Eilish
“West Coast” Lana Del Ray

SAGITTARIUS
I made this playlist with several different themes in mind. The Sagittarius is very hard working but needs to be grounded sometimes. It is a fire sign which also means it needs to be fed some songs that remind them to breathe. The songs pay homage to the hard working attitude of the Sagittarius. Other songs are meant to encourage them to escape reality for a minute. I tried to find balance between a song geared towards perseverance and ones geared towards looking back at success.
The Track List:
“9 to 5” Dolly Parton
“What About Us” P!nk
“Life is a Highway” Rascal Flatts
“American Pie” Don McLean
“Waiting on the World to Change” John Mayer
“Go Your Own Way” Fleetwood Mac
“Fireflies” Owl City
“Rhythm of Love” Plain White T’s
“Lost Boy” Ruth B.
“Here Comes the Sun” The Beatles

CAPRICORN
The Capricorn is easily drawn in by cheesy love. The Capricorn is the stereotypical hopeless romantic. They are very similar to Cancer with their sensitivity but tend to appreciate the more positive emotional stimulus. The songs on the track list are meant to track to both of these attributes. Some classic love songs, heartbreak songs, and nostalgia. Relatable emotion is what the Capricorn will really enjoy. That is what this playlist is aiming for.
The Track List:
“Somebody to Love” Queen
“Who I Am” Nick Jonas
“Royals” Lorde
“Summertime Sadness” Lana Del Ray
“Library Magic” The Head and The Heart
“Cough Syrup” Young the Giant
“Netflix Trip” AJR
“You’ve got The Love” Florence and the Machine
“wish you were gay” Billie Eilish
“Like Real People Do” Hozier

AQUARIUS
The Aquarius is actually the sign of the zodiac I am most confused by. However, one of the most common things I hear is that they are very aloof. I have never actually experienced this. So, I created a playlist targeted at hitting the empathic side of an Aquarius. I focused my attention towards indie music. This is a genre that can quickly be looked over or misunderstood, which is sometimes how I feel about the Aquarius. I wanted to give it a chance to speak to its strengths.
The Track List:
“Froot” MARINA
“Chocolate” The 1975
“Holocene” Bon Iver
“hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me” Lana Del Ray
“Touch” Cigarettes After Sex
“When the Party’s Over” Billie Eilish

“Rivers and Roads” The Head and The Heart
“From the Dining Table” Harry Styles
“Ocean” Seafret

PISCES
Last, but certainly not least, is my own sign of the zodiac. The Pisces is highly emotional. Unlike the Cancer, who is very sensitive, the Pisces takes everything to the extreme (whether for good or for bad). They tend to like very upbeat songs but can feel very overwhelmed at first. The playlist was created with this in mind. It starts out very soft, get very energetic, and then mellows back out to close feeling calm. This will appeal to the confusing side of the Pisces. The songs tug at the heartstrings but at the same time make you feel very happy.
The Track List:
“Only For a Moment” Lola Marsh
“Location” AJR
“Dog Days Are Over” Florence and the Machine
“Paper Rings” Taylor Swift
“We Belong” Pat Benetar
“Grip” Bastille
“Burn the Pages” Sia
“One Foot” WALK THE MOON
“Beautiful People” Ed Sheeran
“Sunsets for Somebody Else” Jack Johnson

I hope that at least some people can enjoy these playlists and feel as though they suit their astrological sign. I had a lot of fun creating these playlists. They are a mixture of my own music taste, researched music, and what I have heard friends really like to listen to. In addition, everything I say about the signs is completely my own observation. I tried to see the best and strongest qualities of each sign and find music to compliment them well. I hope everyone enjoys the music!
