Oh the Places You’ll Nap

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mt Holyoke chapter.

College is all about abandoning your comfort zone and casting yourself into the unknown. This is a type of courage that can’t be found without trying new things. And sometimes, that includes napping in public.

Let’s face it: if you’re not feeling underslept right now (in which case, wow, congrats) then you probably have within the past week. When the coffee won’t kick in, your bed’s too far away, and your next class is too soon to fully commit to SnoozeFest 2k15, it’s time to hit the hay, the MoHo way: fearlessly, in the presence of strangers, probably when a tour group is walking by! When your eyelids start drifting south, these are our top places to cat nap:

1. The Library

Keeping in mind its vastness and endless nooks and crannies, there’s about a 100% chance that someone is asleep somewhere in the library at all times. If you’re more of a head-on-the-desk dozer, consider a secluded desk in the stacks, maybe by a window to absorb some vitamin D. (You did say on your resume that you could multitask, right?) The most ideal place to fall asleep in the building is absolutely the bean bag room above the reading room, but a word of warning: these monoliths of comfort have a trance-like quality that could knock out Bigfoot. Only resort to these if you’re in it for at least a full hour and a half R.E.M. cycle.

2. Kendade Atrium

Give Kendade your tired, your broke, your stressed-out masses yearning for a study break. Nabbing the full couches is a challenge, especially during the lunch rush or right when classes get out, but once it’s yours, reward yourself with blissful sleep. If privacy and noise aren’t a big issue for you, feel free to get some snacks at the café and listen to the lullaby of clacking laptop keyboards BS-ing overdue lab reports and the endless orgo student wails.

3. The Common Rooms

This might seem obvious, but hear me out: finding a good nap spot is a hunt that only rewards those who know how to tirelessly search while tired beyond belief. Every dorm has its own perks and downsides that are hard to notice until you’re faced with them. Are you good at falling asleep in a high-traffic area, like an area near a dining hall during meal hours? If not, seek out a sunroom, like those in the Rockies or Pearsons. Want to thaw out after this winter’s inevitable Snowpocalypse? Make the trek to Prospect, where you can turn on the electric fireplace and hopefully bring some feeling back into your fingers and toes.

Anywhere’s a bed if you’re sleepy enough, but those are my personal recommendations. Other suggestions include the Eliot House lounge (homey and warm year-round), Shattuck’s Cassani Lounge (although you might get some strange looks from professors, and there are often meetings held here), and the third floor of Blanchard next to the Class Board office. (From an editor: “There’s a room accessible to all MoHo students by OneCard and it has cozy chairs and couches!) So cast off your fear of public embarrassment and finally start to do college right, and slightly more fresh-faced than you were before!

Mt Holyoke

Jess Noé was born and raised at the Jersey Shore (not the one seen on TV.) A sophomore at MHC, she is studying English, journalism, media and broadcast. Along with writing for Her Campus, she hosts a radio show for WMHC, where she would LIKE to play "Burnin' Up" by the Jonas Brothers on repeat for the entirety of her two-hour weekly show, but sadly, she is very much not allowed to do so. Jess hopes to someday own a private beach, where she will live with her many, many dogs and her husband, Zayn Malik. While writing this bio, she saw a spider, screamed, and retreated to another room. She is terribly afraid of bugs.
Mount Holyoke College is a gender-inclusive, historically women's college in South Hadley, MA.
