With a little less than a month left of classes, it is hard to believe that freshman year of college is coming to an end. At this time a year ago, many current freshmen were finalizing their college decision. They were starting to actually internalize the fact that they were going to be high school graduates soon – yes, high school graduates. It was almost like the end of an era.

This milestone generated many emotions – both positive and negative. People knew that parting separate ways from their family and friends would not be easy, and it was evident that there were a lot of unknowns ahead. There was a lot to look forward to as well – dorm decorating, meeting new people, picking classes, joining clubs, and being in a whole new atmosphere.

Finally, the journey began on a warm August morning as cars pulled up on Chew Street and families moved in their college kids. The time of the year most people spent their summers anticipating was here at last. Although many people were nervous and anxious, they soon realized how unnecessary all the anxiety really was because in the end everything works out. It is true that freshman year involved a lot of transitioning, however, there are many aspects that make it worthwhile. Here are three reasons why freshman year is amazing.

  1. A fresh start: No one really knows each other those first few days of freshman year so everyone – yes, everyone – is looking for someone to walk to class with, sit at lunch with, or simply converse with. This gives people the flexibility of meeting many students and forming new friendships. Additionally, they don’t have to carry their high school identity with them and can have a fresh start if they would like to.
  2. Independence: No more parents telling you when to get up, to do your homework, or what to and not to eat. You are now in charge of running your life and making these types of decisions for yourself. There are many positive aspects that come along with having independence. For example, you can go out partying until whatever time you want – even if you have class the next day. You can also eat whatever you want; the world is your oyster. On the downside, you have to get yourself up in the morning and must do your own laundry – like a true college kid. In all seriousness, though, having independence is really special because you finally have the freedom to do whatever you want however you want.
  3. Everything is new: Both the people and places you encounter freshman year are so new. This brings a lot of excitement because you don’t know what is to come. The activities are always something to look forward to because you aren’t used to them – unlike the upperclassmen who have been around longer. Additionally, the simple fact of seeing new faces as you walk along the campus is refreshing.

Overall freshman year was an incredible adventure and although it was scary at first, I wouldn’t trade this year for anything. Thank you for all the “hellos” to new faces, the exciting experiences, the independence, and the lessons learned. To all the incoming freshman out there, make the best of this year. Take risks, have fun, and just enjoy every moment of being a freshman; it really does fly by fast. It feels as though only yesterday was move-in day.
