Whether we want it to or not, writer’s block happens to all of us. Sometimes I’ll sit down to write an outline or a research paper, and I can’t bring myself to get a single word down on the page. Although writer’s block can be extremely frustrating, there are a few ways to conquer it.
If you’re sitting in your room, the library, or wherever you do your work and realize you’ve been staring at a blank document for a while, shut your computer. Go on a walk or do other homework. Sometimes what helps me is taking a lap around the library outside if it’s nice outside or calling my family. All it takes sometimes is allowing yourself to relax your mind and then sitting back down at the computer feeling refreshed. You will not be benefiting yourself if you stare at your computer screen for an unreasonable amount of time.
Sometimes listening to music inspires me to write. If I can’t figure out how to put my thoughts into words, I’ll listen to various genres of music to help get those ideas out of my head. Also, when you can’t get your ideas onto paper, just start jotting down simple thoughts. They don’t have to be full sentences or make any sense at all, but then when you return back later to start writing, you’ll actually have quite the head start. All it takes is one golden idea to get your creative juices flowing again.
Instead of working yourself up or getting stressed because you can’t complete a writing assignment, take a few deep breaths and come back to it. To ensure that you don’t feel pressured and stressed, get started on essays early so that if writer’s block does happen to you, you have a little bit of time to get over it. Make life easier for yourself and allow yourself to take the time to formulate your ideas. Write a good outline and thesis and then start on your papers.
Best of luck to all and I hope you conquer that writer’s block you may be experiencing!
