Part of what makes college so special is the endless opportunities that are available. On a campus such as Muhlenberg’s, there are a variety of clubs to choose from – you name it and it is most likely there. The activities range from arts to sciences, to writing to business, to community service and the list goes on. Taking on certain clubs is beneficial in so many different ways. It is a good way to meet people who share common interests, to get involved by contributing to the school, and most importantly to do what you love.
Picking which extracurriculars to join is not always easy because there are so many options and you can only do so much, it’s like picking a pair of shoes – you want them all but you can only pick one. Luckily, I am so happy with all the clubs I ended up choosing, they each have something unique about them. Here’s the inside scoop on one of my favorite clubs, Muhlenberg Fashion Society:
Muhlenberg Fashion Society or MFS, as most people like to call it, is the perfect club for all fashion lovers out there. It consists of two parts: Mode and the fashion club itself. Mode is the club’s magazine which features various sections such as trends on campus, tips for certain looks, and all things fashion. This sounds simple, but there is actually a tremendous amount of work that goes behind the scene. The first steps are choosing a theme for the magazine and sharing ideas for what can be incorporated in it. Once that is over, the work starts being executed. Some people help out with writing the articles and others edit the content. One of the highlights of this whole process is the photoshoot. It is always a fun way for members of the club to channel their inner style icon. Last semester’s shoot was at a diner and this semester’s shoot was in the park and involved lots color powder – the type that is used at Holi. Last but not least, comes the release party. This is always a fun way to get all the club members together and celebrate the publication of an awesome magazine which involved lots of hard work.
Fashion club itself is also super fun. There is always a new DIY happening each week. These range from doing your own henna tattoo to learning cool nail art to styling your hair in many different ways. Additionally, there are trips, such as the one to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This is a great way to get out of the Muhlen-bubble while still being with some of your favorite Mules who also love fashion. There are also several events throughout the year MFS hosts. For instance, they have a clothing swap once a semester, where you can swap some of your old clothes in exchange for someone else’s clothes. There are also raffles where you can win awesome accessories.
These are some of the reasons that make MFS as special as it is. It is so rewarding to be able to do something you love. You gain so much out of that. So for those looking to get more involved, or to have a nice break from classes, I definitely recommend joining clubs and to all fashion lovers on campus be sure to join the MFS family!
