Is it true that “distance makes the heart grow fonder” or does it do the opposite? Millions of college students across the country study abroad and many of those students are in romantic relationships. Studying abroad is a life-changing experience where students meet new people, visit new countries, and have an enriching education. However, it might be hard for many couples to maintain their relationship overseas. Here are some tips on how to keep your relationship strong while studying abroad:
Let them know you’ll be busy
When you’re studying abroad, you most likely won’t have a ton of free time. You’ll be exploring new cities, meeting new friends, and doing homework, of course. So, you won’t be able to talk to them as much as you normally would. Let your significant other know that you won’t be able to text all day, and that’s okay.
Communicate
Communication is key when having a long-distance relationship. Try to text every day. Even just a “good night” text or sending your significant other pictures of your excursions will suffice. It’s just important to maintain that contact, so your significant other know that you’re still thinking of them. Also, try to plan one day a week where you FaceTime or call you’re significant other to fill them in on the amazing week you’ve had.
Make a plan
This goes along with communication, but before studying abroad, have a conversation with your significant other about your expectations for when you’ll be overseas. This means to discuss scheduling time to talk, and, if the person can afford it, maybe visiting you while you’re away.
Know that it will be hard but temporary
Of course not seeing your significant other for months is going to be difficult, especially when you’re used to seeing them often. But what helps is knowing that it is all temporary. Additionally, think about how quickly a college semester goes. You’ll be so busy exploring that you won’t have time to stay in your room and think about how much you miss your significant other.
