Before entering a university, everyone does have a vision about what’s it going to be like.
It might have the most attractive crowd you have seen in your life, with size zero figures, razor sharp jawlines and the most chic fashion.
It might be that your first day would consist of a heroic entry, a tragic event and a meeting with a really annoying but cute guy.
Maybe you would be the object of attention, with people fawning all over your quiet and mysterious look.
Or you hope that you would instantly bond with some people who would become your best friends for life.
Wake up. This is what ‘Netflix university’ looks like.
For me , ‘Netflix University’ consists of all the unrealistic expectations and over the top portrayals of schools and colleges which are seen in TV shows and movies.
In reality ,never in a million years would your admission options be as easy “Going to Harvard with your boyfriend” or “ Going to UCLA with your best friend” . Or it isn’t necessary that you would party hard every single day and still manage to keep up with your courses, especially if it’s a pretty demanding one. Priorities are extremely important and there is no way you would be able to have it all that easily.
Also, since you might not have 30 something professional and attractive actors as your batchmates , the options of looking for your ‘better half’ do get reduced significantly . Yes, even my heart broke a little.
Crazy , mind blowing pranks which go wrong and make your life upside down? The chances are less , but yes they might not be as simple to solve as you see on the screen.
It is saddening to see that people who actually do work hard, create something unique and stay up at nights are just brushed off as “the geeks and nerds” , who are constantly pining for some airhead.
It is the general representation of university that sometimes irks me . Almost every TV Show / Movie consists of a major party with some spicy drama , a drastic transformation of the main character in a mere few months and the big love triangle , which so does not capture the true essence of college.
College is far from a constant party. Let’s just say that you might not have as much free time as you see . There are going to be struggles , difficult choices, juggling between your part time job/ internship and exams, and meeting deadlines. There are going to be heartbreaks , your friendships might not stay and you might not find your perfect one by graduation.
But that’s the beauty of this transition from a teenager to an adult. College teaches you so many more important things , things which are often overlooked. You are not going to be the outcast if you put in extra hours . If you really pursue your passion instead of involving yourself in petty dramas all the time , you are the better person. These years are going to change you for the better or for the worse, and thus the decisions you take do matter a lot.
University can be the best time if your lives and you are going to make amazing memories which might not be that ‘glamorous’ , but trust me when I say ,they are going to be a hundred times better.
