The weekend of February 2nd-5th Manhattahnville College’s Dance & Theatre and Music Departments presented The Pajama Game, a musical with lyrics and music by Richard Adler & Jerry Ross and book by George Abbott & Richard Bissell. This musical is the story of labor troubles inside a pajama factory in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. There is also a budding romance between the new superintendent, Sid Sorokin, and Grievance Committee head Katherine “Babe” Williams. Throughout the musical we see their romance go back and forth, as they struggle on opposite sides for the employees protests to get a seven and a half cent raise. I had the opportunity to not only be apart of this amazing production, but also sit down and talk to one of the stars of the show, Andrew Murray, who plays Sid Sorokin, about his experiences in The Pajama Game.
What was the audition process like for you?
AM: The audition process is slightly different depending on your major and year. I had it a little easier because I’m a music ed. major, and I’m a junior. I only had to sing one “golden age” showtune.
How did you feel when you found out you were the lead?
AM: I was very excited! I have never gotten a lead role before so I was excited for this brand new opportunity.
What was the hardest part of the rehearsal process? What is the easiest?
AM: I think the hardest part for me was trying to portray a serious character. I was always getting “comedic relief” characters in the past so taking away that comedic part and putting more of a serious front into my lines was a challenge. The easiest part I am not sure, I guess it was the learning the music.
What is your favorite part in the show?
AM: My favorite part in the show is when I have to sing a duet with myself. It feels weird to hear myself sing a phrase and then I am suppose to come in singing the next phrase.
How did you like working with Heather as a romantic interest?
AM: Heather and I have been close friends since my freshman year of college, so it doesn’t feel awkward or weird between us.
What was it like working with Professor Cherry and Professor Meyer?
AM: Working with the Cherry’s is an absolute delight. They’re always very supportive and give you very helpful tips on how you can improve your character. They really have mastered their craft.
