Meet This Week’s Profile: Kayla Tate

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NCAT chapter.

Where are you from?

Durham, NC

What’s your major and classification?

I’m junior political science student and with a spanish minor.

Are you involved on campus?

Yes, for the past two years I’ve been an Orientation Student Leader (MADE @T Coordinator this past summer), Bull City Aggies secretary, Holland Hall peer mentor, chairperson of the Student Judiciary Council, Artist(spoken word, draw/paint/photography).

What do you aspire to be?

I plan to become a Civil Rights Attorney but my ultimate goal is to become a Supreme Court Justice.

When and why did you start becoming interested in painting and spoken word? What other forms of art do you practice?

I was in a pageant my senior year of high school and of course I needed a talent. I always had a love for spoken word and thought I would try it out so I wrote my own piece for the pageant and I got a really great reaction from my performance so I joined my high school team and the rest is history. As far as drawing/painting goes I taught myself how to draw in elementary school I always asked my mom to buy me “How to draw” books from the book fairs. I would sit down and just follow the steps and eventually I was able to just look at stuff and draw it. I played the alto saxophone (6th grade-11th grade) and mellophone (11th-freshman year of college here at A&T) and in my mind I’m a dancer.

Who motivates you the most?

I would have to say God, my mom, my best friends, and my peers. I always say I just want to be great and after seeing my mom struggle and knowing tomorrow is never promised I try to maintain a positive outlook. I try to be positive in life, and give everyday, everyone, and my everything.

Tell us some fun facts that we don’t know about you.

My favorite colors are purple and teal. I’m an only child and team Aquarius. I love to have fun, food, clothes, and shoes. I enjoy being around people that’s where I get most of my energy from, however I do like to be alone sometimes. I also get my energy from my alone time and being in my own space with peace and quiet. Some people don’t know this but I’m a huge fan of Malcolm X. I’m also a fan of deep conversations.

I am Alexis Hooper, President of the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University chapter of Her Campus.
Hi everyone! I am a sophomore at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University who should be majoring in Weddings, but is actually a Journalism & Mass Communications student with a concentration in Multimedia. Originally I am from Woodbridge, Virginia, which is about 30 minutes south of our nation’s capital. I have lived here all my life, but I’m not afraid to branch out and explore the world. This past summer I studied abroad in Sydney, Australia to engage and immerse myself in Australian culture. The experience was phenomenal and I’m already counting down the days until I can return that beautiful country. Check out my Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook.
