Stress Be Gone: 5 Ways to Help Eliminate Stress

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NCAT chapter.

We all go through things that we consider stressful. Whether it’s school related, a family and friend problem, fear of the future, or all things in between. 2018 is on the horizon. Here are some ways on how to eliminate that annoying and overwhelming feeling we call stress.

1. Get more sleep! Sleep and mood are closely connected; poor or inadequate sleep can cause irritability and stress, while healthy sleep can enhance well-being. Chronic insomnia may increase the risk of developing.

2. Slow down and put yourself first! For those of us who are very family oriented, the therapist for our friends, and involved in lots of extracurricular activities, you may need to reevaluate your plate. Don’t bite more than you can chew. It’s ok to say “no” or “I can’t right now “ and “Maybe later.” There’s nothing worse than being too busy for your own self.

3. Plan ahead! Procrastination is a key component in many stress related problems for young adults. Buy a planner and don’t wait until the last minute to tackle a task. If you procrastinate too much with something, it will most likely start to stress you out and cause anxiety, especially when other people or things are involved.

4. Hit the gym! Exercise and other physical activity produce endorphins—chemicals in the brain that act as natural painkillers and also improve the ability to sleep, which in turn reduces stress.

5. Relaxation techniques! One very simple technique is to focus on a word or phrase that has a positive meaning to you. Words such as “calm” “love” and “peace” work well, or you could think of a self-affirming mantra such as “I deserve calm in my life” or “Grant me serenity.”  Focus on your chosen word or phrase; if you find your mind has wandered or you become aware of intrusive thoughts entering your mind, simply disregard them and return your focus to the chosen word or phrase.

Hi everyone! I am a sophomore at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University who should be majoring in Weddings, but is actually a Journalism & Mass Communications student with a concentration in Multimedia. Originally I am from Woodbridge, Virginia, which is about 30 minutes south of our nation’s capital. I have lived here all my life, but I’m not afraid to branch out and explore the world. This past summer I studied abroad in Sydney, Australia to engage and immerse myself in Australian culture. The experience was phenomenal and I’m already counting down the days until I can return that beautiful country. Check out my Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook.
