1. When did you graduate from North Carolina State University?
I Graduated in May 2011.
2. What degree did you graduate with?
A BA in English, and a minor in journalism.
3. Where are you working now?
I’m working at figment.com in New York. It’s a website for young adults to post short stories, novels in the making, etc. and other people can read and comment.Â
4. How did you find your job?
I found it on bookjobs.com!
5. Is it paid or unpaid?
Unpaid (thank goodness for babysitting and free rent!)
6. What do you do during a typical day in the office?
I just started, but today I got to make up a quiz (“Which Pretty Little Liars character are you?”). I also have to find young adult authors who are coming out with new books. Today I also created a “fig frag” which basically mocks the cover of a book.Â
7. Do you have any job prospects for your new budding career?
Outside of my internship, all I do is network. I’ve had meetings with about a dozen editorial assistants, publicity assistants, and other people in the book publishing industry. My ideal position would be an editorial assistant for a big publishing house in a teen imprint. I think I’m getting closer and closer every day to finding a full time position. But who knows! It’s a really competitive business. Right now, I am living in my aunt’s basement right outside Manhattan. But after I get a full time job, I will be moving out asap.Â
8. So…Tell me! How is the New York City life!?
I absolutely love New York. I worked up here last summer, so I know the city pretty well. But the transition was (and still is) really difficult. Most of my friends haven’t graduated, so leaving them behind was tough. But I do know some people up here which is great. While the city is SO expensive, they have really great happy hour deals. Going out is so fun and you never know what is going to end up happening (last month I didn’t end up getting home until 6 am. Crazy!).Â
