Dermaplaning, also known as facial shaving, has gained a ton of traction recently in the beauty and skincare industry. Many people have come to appreciate all of dermaplaning’s beneficial impacts as well as how easy it is to do at home. I promise you that dermaplaning will up your skincare and makeup game.

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is, simply put, facial shaving. However, there is a big difference between dermaplaning and shaving with a regular razor and shaving cream. Dermaplaning uses really small razors and is done with a dry face. The purpose of dermaplaning is to remove the peach fuzz, not thicker hair, off of the face to reveal baby-soft skin underneath. There are also so many valuable effects from dermaplaning, besides just hair removal.

Why should you start dermaplaning?

First off, I want to add that I was extremely hesitant towards dermaplaning at first because it looked intimidating and time-consuming. Many people worry that your peach fuzz will grow back thicker after dermaplaning, but this is not the case! After starting dermaplaning, I can’t imagine going without it. It is truly a game changer when it comes to absorption of skincare products and makeup application.

Dermaplaning not only removes peach fuzz, but it also removes the dead skin off of your face. This exfoliation is great for your skin and way better than other physical exfoliants like face scrubs, which, by the way, please do not use those! The fresh skin left after dermaplaning will help your active ingredients, like retinol and vitamin C, penetrate the skin easier. This means that you will get more of the benefits of these active ingredients without using more of the product. Lastly, dermaplaning makes your makeup look so smooth and beautiful. The first time I put on foundation after dermaplaning I was truly blown away at how beautiful the product looked on my skin.

How do I dermaplane safely?

Learning how to dermaplane safely is major in making sure you see results. First, you need the right type of razor to dermaplane. These razors are really small, only a few inches long, and have one blade. I bought mine off Amazon, but you can find them at beauty stores or even Target at really inexpensive prices. When you are ready to begin, wash and dry your face, making sure your face is completely dry without any product before using the razor. You want to use extremely light, feather-like motions going down your face in the direction of the hair growth. You can look up YouTube videos of the correct technique to use to help guide you, like beauty guru Susan Yara’s amazing video on dermaplaning at home.

After carefully and gently removing all the peach fuzz, I like to just rinse off my face with water and add lots of hydrating products. For me, dermaplaning does dry out my skin a bit, so it’s important to use products like hyaluronic acid and rosehip oil to restore some moisture. I also love using a hydrating mask like this Versed one the day after dermaplaning to keep giving my skin some extra care. Besides hydrating, make sure you are feeding your skin some of those active ingredients while it is free of any barriers! And finally, but absolutely the most important step, apply lots of sunscreen after dermaplaning. Sunscreen is crucial in protecting your skin after exfoliating because your skin will be extra sensitive to sun exposure. While keeping all these pointers in mind, enjoy your baby-smooth skin!
