As spring rapidly approaches the Raleigh area, I’ve compiled a list of my favorite (albeit, random) trends coming this spring and summer 2023.
Sunscreen
After Supergoop’s Glow Screen came to the scene at the end of 2022, sunscreen seems to be having its moment. Hundreds of influencers and skincare fanatics everywhere concluded their morning routine with the tinted sunscreen, or whatever variation of SPF they preferred both to protect their skin from sun damage and to add an extra glow. As young people continue to invest in their skin care routines, many of the products that have increased in popularity, such as glycolic acid, retinol, or prescription solutions such as Accutane or tretinoin increase the risk of sunburn. Because of this, I think that sunscreen is going to be even more popular this summer, with girls carrying it around with them as they do with lip balm. Speaking of, Make sure to use a lip balm with an SPF!
My Favorite Sunscreens:
Jergens Natural Glow Face Moisturizer
Structured Totes
2023 is the year of the girl on the go. We’re busier than ever and our purses should keep us ready for anything. The tote bag was super popular this time last year, but I could never get fully behind it because it was impossible to keep organized. Enter the structured tote. There’s enough space to hold anything you might need throughout the day, and it has a flat base so nothing sinks to the bottom. My structured tote has been a beach bag, overnight bag, snack bag, and much more.
My Favorite Structured Totes:
Midi and Maxi lengths
This year, elevated casual dressing has risen to popularity. While it’s not the same as Millennials wearing business casual to their college bars in 2008, it seems that many consumers are wearing a more sophisticated everyday look (think the rise of matching sets or the ‘clean girl’ aesthetic. Despite the weather warming, I think we’ll still see a surge of longer length skirts and dresses to reflect that sort of elevated effortlessness. They can be dressed up or down, and will keep you cool without having to worry about your backpack pulling it up as you walk to class. While I don’t think mini skirts will become totally obsolete, I can’t wait to see more people working with longer hemlines.
Natural Hairstyles
This past fall and winter, I was addicted to the voluminous blowout that’s been all over Tiktok since the Dyson Airwrap gained popularity. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m so self conscious about my natural hair! I feel like it’s always a combination of frizzy, dull, oily and dry unless I wrangle it with my Revlon Blow Dry Brush. However, as it gets hotter outside and I have to wash my hair more often, I’m preparing to let my natural waves have their moment. These past few wash days, I’ve let my hair air dry instead of blowing it out. While I still plan on doing my hair for events or nights out, embracing my natural hair has saved me lots of time and arm pain!
My Favorite Natural Hair Products:
Ouai hair oil (use on dry hair only)
Eva-NYC Therapy Session Hair Mask
Climaplex Anti Frizz Protector Cream
Crochet
I LOVE CROCHET. Crochet bags, crochet tops, crochet hats, crochet beach cover ups; PLEASE GIVE ME ALL THE CROCHET. I definitely noticed more people wearing crochet sweaters this winter, but I think this craft really shines with summer styles. I can’t wait to build my crochet collection this summer, and hope to see others wearing it in the upcoming seasons.
DAD SHORTS
If you told middle school me I’d be wearing fingertip length shorts at my big age, she would be flabbergasted. Twenty one year old me is a different story. I’ve found dad shorts to be so much more comfortable for everyday. Paired with an oversized top or a tiny one, dad shorts really work with the “effortlessly cool vibe” of the warmer months.
I can’t wait to see what everyone’s wearing this spring! Remember to take your allergy pills. Raleigh pollen is no joke ;).
