A few weeks ago, my roommates and I went to the movie theater and decided to see the movie, Spencer. I went into it blind as I did not know much about Princess Diana, nor did I keep up with the royal family. I didn’t read any reviews beforehand, so I thought that the movie would be more of an outlook of Diana’s life as a Princess; however, that was not the case. The film ended up being a psychological drama about Princess Diana’s struggles within the royal family, and it was very fascinating.

The movie starts with Princess Diana getting lost on her drive to have dinner with the royal family. After that, the movie takes a deep dive into Diana’s thoughts and feelings surrounding the royal family, her husband Prince Charles in particular. Viewers see her unhappy with her marriage and royal status and she struggles to keep quiet about her feelings. The movie also touches on her eating disorder throughout the entirety of the film. Some other intense scenes might make some viewers a bit queasy when watching. One moment in the film made me close my eyes and look away as I felt disturbed and uncomfortable watching. With that being said, I would keep that in mind before watching the movie as it is an intense psychological drama, and one may feel uncomfortable at times.

I know that many thought Kristen Stewart could not pull off the acting needed to play such an intense and major role, but she honestly did great. Her accent was funny but convincing, and I later found out that she spent six months learning it. Although there are some moments in the film where Kristen Stewart’s acting gets a little cringe. For example, sometimes, she would move her head the same way she would in Twilight in a way that looks and feels unnatural and awkward. If you do not know what I am talking about, go watch Twilight, but basically, she often tilts her head to the side and looks at the camera in a weird way that I do not know how to explain. I do not know if she does this in her other films as I have not watched many Kristen Stewart movies, but I noticed it when watching Spencer. However, despite her little moments, I absolutely enjoyed watching her act in this movie as Princess Diana. I think this film shows that she truly is a good actress and can handle more intense roles such as this one.

Overall, the whole experience was great. I enjoyed going to the theater after having not gone in a long time due to the pandemic. It felt nice to sit in the theater and watch a movie with a large group of people. From what I observed, everyone in the theater also enjoyed the film, laughed at funny moments, and walked away pleased. Afterward, on the walk to the subway station to go home, my roommates and I talked about how much we enjoyed the movie and how great it was to go to the movie theater after such a long time of not being able to. So if you haven’t already, go see Spencer in theaters. It is honestly a great movie with great cinematography.
