This week, I want to take all of you guys to one of the best places in New Mexico, White Sands! It is one of my favorite attractions to visit and has been a place where I have made many memories.
White Sands is a national park that was built in 1936 and is one of the world’s greatest natural wonders. It exactly what its name makes it out to be. The location is filled with white sand from miles to miles, and is located in the outskirts of Alamogordo. This national beauty is made up of about 275 square miles of gypsum covered desert creating the world’s largest gypsum dune field. It also has a large variety of wildlife and native plants that can only be found in this area.
White Sands is a popular attraction for families and friends. Sledding, camping, football and hiking are among the various activities that the park has to offer. If you choose to hike, be sure to keep track of your surroundings and where you have been, so you don’t get lost.
For a one-day visit, I would highly recommend buying a sled at the store near the park entrance. Sledding down the white sand dunes is an infamous pastime among tourist. Also, be sure to buy some wax to help the sled ride faster and more smoothly. Don’t forget to bring picnic food and lots of water. After hitting the dunes with your sled, you’re likely to be left parched and hungry. Lastly, bring sunscreen. Since the sand is white, it reflects the UV waves off of the sand making it easier and faster to get sunburned.
White Sands has a lot to offer and is not only a great spot to visit, but it also extremely affordable for college students. The entrance fee is only five dollars per person and lasts for a total of seven days. So, the next time you’re stuck wondering what to do on the weekend, round up your friends and go to White Sands!
