10 Things That Happen When You Co-op in a Small Town, As Told By Chris Traeger from “Parks and Rec”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

As you might have seen in the profile that was posted a couple of weeks ago, I recently started a co-op at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. I love it so far, but it’s definitely an adjustment transitioning from the city to the small town life. Here are a few things that every small town co-op student can relate to:

  1. Things get eerily quiet.

Life without background noise takes some getting used to.

  1. The price of your rent goes down.

*Writes check for one quarter the price of student housing*

  1. Any social event becomes an opportunity to get out of the house.

Trivia night at the local diner? Sounds great! Knitting club at the library? Count me in!

  1. You constantly bump into your coworkers.

Going to the gym after work? Yeah, so is everyone else in your building.

  1. You get to actually experience nature.

How can there be so many trees in one place?

  1. Cooking dinner for yourself is a necessity.

No Panera within walking distance? What is this life?

  1. You take every opportunity you can to go into the city.

Winter storm Jonas can’t hold you back.

  1. The word “quaint” becomes a permanent part of your vocabulary.

It can be used to describe your desk, your room, and your life in general.

  1. You get to enjoy some valuable alone time.

Finally, no one’s around to interrupt your late-night How I Met Your Mother binge session!

  1. You realize that you don’t need to live in the city to have an exciting life, but you’re also grateful that you’ll be back in Beantown soon.
