Christmas Shopping Saving Tips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

The holidays are fast approaching, folks, and we all know what that means. Christmas cheer, apple cider, huge dinners, catching up with the family, right? Actually, more like stress, stress, and more stress! What do I get this person? How do I save money? Where should I go shopping? Should I get crafty this year? Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas, but those few moments leading up to it can get a little overwhelming. Don’t worry, collegiettes! I’ve got your back. Check out these money saving tips!

Did Someone Say Free Shipping? Yes, you’ve heard right. Many websites offer free shipping during the holiday season as an added incentive for people to shop online. Definitely check around to see which stores will be offering this bonus!

Get Crafty. Know how to knit or crochet? Got any other crafty tricks up your sleeve? Then you obviously have a huge advantage! Craft supplies can be pretty cheap to buy and who wouldn’t love a gift made with love and care? Not sure what to make? Hats, scarves, sweaters, blankets, etc. make great gifts. Or, how about giving someone you love the gift of an adorable crotchet pig? Check out the instructions here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OMbmpyuv64

Get Culinary. Cookies and brownies and cakes! Oh my! People love baked goods, so maybe a trip to the grocery store is in the cards. Make a whole batch of treats and wrap them up in tins and cellophane bags to hand out. It’s a cheap, cute, and delicious alternative to spending lots of money on gifts that might end up back in the store or in the back of a closet!

Have A Plan. If you don’t know what you’re looking for, you may be more likely to make rash decisions in a store and overpay for something. It’s always a good idea to think things over and make a list of potential gifts. This also limits buyer’s remorse, which saves time and money.

Do Your Homework.

The internet is such an amazing tool, especially when it comes to shopping. It’s never been so easy to compare prices from store to store from the comfort of your couch! Also, if you’re looking for particular gifts, store websites will let you know if they’re in stock in a store near you. It doesn’t get any more convenient than that!

Set A Budget.

This may be the second to last item on this list, but it’s arguably the most important. It’s necessary to set goals so that you avoid overspending. Set an overall budget. Set a maximum spending limit for each person on your list. This way, you focus your attention on gifts in your price range and you avoid surprises.

Start NOW! The earlier you start, the better. This doesn’t mean you have to go out and buy every gift now. The idea is to start thinking of what you want to give people and start browsing store circulars every now and then. You’ll find that an early start helps limit stress in the long run.

So, now that you know how to save money, all that’s left to do is to figure out what to buy…

My name is Hope and I'm a Communication Studies major. I chose to be a Communication Studies major because I love learning about different media and how each type affects the audience in a different way. Also, this major puts me on the path toward a publishing job, which is important to me. I was born in Oakland, California and raised in Richmond, California, but I've lived in South Jersey for the past five years. Some of my interests include playing tennis, watching tennis, and spending time with my friends and family.
